That is a bummer. I haven’t read most of his books, but I’ve read several. 66 is too young to die! I’m going to live forever, or die trying.

I dunno, I think his name carries weight and now that he’s passed away, they’ll attempt to cash in on it more in memory of him. I have to agree with @RoadRunner as I didn’t see this coming at all. My father will be upset to hear this.

I think I gave up on his books after _Sum of All Fears_. Everything got too detailed and convoluted for me. The breaking point was 10 pages to describe the first 5 nanoseconds of a nuclear detonation.
But still…The whole early Jack Ryan saga, plus _Red Storm Rising_…that _was_ junior high and high school for me. And _The Hunt for Red October_ is one of my favorite movies of all time, even if they did completely change the end of the story. If we could have gotten a few more of those movies, we could have had “which Jack Ryan” debates much like the “who was the best James Bond” discussions.

_Sum of All Fears_ was the last really good one in that series, although _Rainbow Six_ was also quite good. After that, it became political wanking, with him figuring out a contrived scenario to put his hero in the White House and fix American government (interestingly, using a suicidal airliner attack). I read a few more and gave up.
_Red Rabbit_ was just pure awful.
_Red October_ was one of the first “grown-up” books I ever read. And I read _Red Storm Rising_ times beyond counting.

_Red Rabbit_ was one of the worst things I’ve ever read. Could have just called it _Tom Clancy Needs to Pay His Mortgage So Here You Go_ and it would have been a lot more accurate.
_Executive Orders_ was one that I loved the first time through and hated when I picked it back up again a few years later.
_Hunt for Red October_ is still amazing; my favorite, though, is _The Cardinal of the Kremlin_. I know it’s not the most popular Ryanverse book, but I love it.

May Tom Clancy rest in peace. I never read any of his books, but I did enjoy some of the movies and videogames based on his work.

Read the early stuff - Red October, Patriot Games, Cardinal of the Kremlin and Red Storm Rising. RSR isn’t part of the Jack Ryan series but an incredibly detailed description of what a third war is Europe might look like.

I think my favorite Clancy book will always be Rainbow Six, mostly because it was the first one I’d ever read. It’s a beast to power through, but seeing the way the Rainbow crew respond to the various ever-more-strange circumstances was always neat.

Agree, and add Clear and Present Danger, and Without Remorse. Patriot Games not as much as the rest. And Red Storm Rising was on my mind until the wall came down.

It’ll be weird going to visit next weekend and not seeing him there. He had a hell of a run. 19 years, 1 week. Outlived all of his little cat friends in the neighborhood, all of whom were younger than him. 3 weeks ago he was still out catching chipmunks.

That’s a respectable age. Mourn his loss, but celebrate a long, happy life.
My average kitty age of loss is 18ish. My longest lived was Mousie, 21 and half when she passed away quietly in her sleep. The youngest was Bob, who suffered renal failure at 8 months and died at almost exactly a year old.

I don’t seem to attach to cats the same way I do dogs. When one of my cats die, it’s sad, but it’s not tragedy. When one of my dogs has died I’m a wreck. I don’t cry at funerals, but digging a grave for a dog, or taking one to the vet for the last time and I’m bawling like a baby.
In any case though, that looks like an awesome cat.
