So true. Her Minecraft party for her son already far exceeds what was done for my own son’s themed party almost 2 years ago. She rocks! 
I know, intellectually, what a massive hit Minecraft is among kids—but it’s still boggling when I see it. To me, it’s still the indie sandbox game my buddies and I discovered in 2010 and still play from time to time. It’s buying 16GB of RAM for a server so we can all crowd together and build at the same time. It’s finagling java versions, CraftBukkit, mods, and config files. It’s worlds away from 12-year olds and birthday parties…but, then, it isn’t worlds away at all, is it?

I am an Original Minecraft player! And it IS crazy to see how HUGE it has gotten. Due to the sale to Microsoft, our local bakery won’t make a Minecraft cake because “They don’t own the rights from Microsoft.” That makes me very sad (And also stressing cause I still have to come up with some sort of cake!).
I am in Florida. The blocks are currently residing my my very very small living room. I still have 18 more to cover, and the sheep and a Creeper toss to build. And I’m very quickly running out of time!
I’m not sure what you’re using to cover them, but it looks like Kraft paper (similar to the paper used for paper sacks), which you can buy in rolls very cheaply. Also, they have textured spray paint which doesn’t cost much.
And if DS wants a Minecraft party, he should start putting some effort into it. Tell him it’s good practice for when he has kids. :weg:

Or… buy some square sponges, some tempura paint (comes in jars of powder, just add water), and do the squares that way. A lot faster (and fun for the kids) than cutting out squares of paper.
I’m willing to bet that you could do a Tom Sawyer and have DS helping pretty damned quick.
He is actually at his grandparent’s house painting backdrops and helping on the EnderDragon. He will be helping me next week since he’ll be out of school. The blocks are covered in construction paper (4 12 x 18inch sheets of warm brown and 2 12 x 18 inch sheets of Holiday Green for the grass, per covered block) and attached to cardboard with spray adhesive. They will not be more decorated than that. They will have to make due with their imagination. 
I’m running out of build days and estimate I need to wrap up the making of the items by Tuesday and resume b-day party stuff the day after. I have a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up!!
The party took place on Saturday and went off with only a few hitches (ALL MY SET-UP HELPED DIDN’T SHOW UP!) So we were missing a few things and not everything was set-up properly (specifically the food table). But here is a snapshot in all its glory. My son said that it was Epic. I happen to agree!

I just hope you don’t have to top this for his twelvth birthday. That would take some doing. (And your help that failed to show needs fed to the creeper.)

Nope, there is no topping this one. We’ve already said that this is his last large party until graduation. 
Nice. We had nice fun parties for years, and then last year totally dropped the ball on it. Need to get back in there.
Great job! That looks fantastic! And I’d be saying the same thing: I do not wish to outdo my outdoing of myself again. If you want another big party, YOU put it together!
(My kids already accuse me of not liking birthdays, because I don’t like to plan little kid parties. Their grandma is free to do it if she wants to, but left to my own devices, we will have a fun family trip somewhere, or something, and HE WILL LIKE IT.)
