What book are you reading right now?

After I finish the Jack Reacher series, I think I’m going to read through all of Michio Kaku’s books. The whole lot of them interest me. And luckily my co-workers are all nerds too, so I won’t be too weird…

Sex Slaves - The Trafficking of Women in Asia.

Not a pleasant or easy read, but informative.

I finally finished the ‘God Delusion’, which pretty much cemented by views on ‘big’ religion. But that’s me and my opinion. Feel free to call me an atheist. I won’t be offended.

Then I read Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’ in less than a day. A light piece of brain-candy, although it was pretty cool to visualise all the places in Florence (seeing how I’ve been there).

I’m currently psyching myself up to read all 30+ of the ‘Magician’ books (Raymond E. Feist) from start to finish. That should keep me quiet for the next few months.

I liked the original series from Magician through Darkness at Sethanon. I’ve read a few of the others and some were decent, but I’ve never felt compelled to get the Rest of the Story, especially once Pug/Milamber became a total munchkin. Easily the least interesting character after Magician.

Pug & Tomas were the central characters in Magician, especially Pug (heck, the book is named after him). Those two were great characters in that book and the main reason have re-read it multiple times (and keep going back to it). I can’t say the same about any of the subsequent books.
I’ve re-read the original “trilogy” a few times, but it’s a bit of a chore at times. I haven’t read any of the others more than once.

The one exception to that is the Empire series with Jannie Wurtz - those three I also keep going back to. Excellent books!

Been on a Fantasy binge lately with Steven Erikson’s Malazan: Book of the Fallen series. It takes a long time to get into, but once that’s done, it does a good job of hooking you in and keeping you hooked. I’m in book #3 now, but it’s actually the fourth and no way am I putting this down anytime soon.

I read my first copy of Magician enough times that the spine separated and I had to buy another copy

I’ve been reading my way through the entire “series” since then. What I like is that while Pug became a bit overpowered, the story branched away from him. He does keep coming back in to help handle things that the others can’t, but he stops being central. None of them are quite quite as good as the Magician, but overall I’ve enjoyed it.

If you’ve ever owned a cat, or more correctly, been owned by a cat, you may be wondering, “Is my cat planning on taking over the galaxy?” The answer is yes, yes they are. You can read one such method in the book I mentioned before, Catalyst. Telepathic cats, genetic engineering, and a planet where the Egyptian worship of cats lives on.

The book does end with the possibility of further stories. Maybe if E.A. Scarborough was able to secure the rights, she could continue the series.

Currently working on another Anne McCaffrey book, Nimisha’s Ship. It’s in her Federated Sentient Planets universe but doesn’t have anything to do with Pern, the Brain and Brawn series, Crystal Singer or whatever. A spaceship designer gets lost during a test run of her new ship and discovers a planet where many others got lost, too.

Interesting thing is that the part I’m in just mentioned Coelura weaving, which is a very rare type of fabric. But it sounded familiar, and I discovered The Coelura on my bookshelf. Looks to be a young adults book with lots and lots of illustrations in it. I’m looking forward to see how the two tie together, if they do at all.

I’ve read quite a bit over the last couple of months. I enjoyed The New York Magician and Casino Infernale in particular. Promise of Blood was also very good and I’m looking forwards to the next in the series.

The New York Magician is urban fantasy, done as a series of shorts that weave into a longer story. A rather promising first book.

Casino Infernale is the latest in Simon Green’s Secret Histories sequence. If you enjoyed the others you’ll enjoy this - more of the same. Unfortunately it is becoming a bit much of the “more of the same”, but hey, it’s still fun.

Finally started “Snuff” - Terry Pratchett, really enjoying it.

JD Robb’s Thankless in Death. She’s one of the few authors that I buy as soon as the book comes out in paperback.

Nimisha’s Ship did turn out to be in the same universe as The Coelura. There was an author interview in the first one where she clarified that though the FSP shows up in many of her books, it’s not the same organization. The universes in her different series are usually separate from each other.

That interview showed how close they were to getting Dragonriders of Pern onto TV back in 1999, but it officially stopped in 2002 when Warner Bros. tried to turn it into another Buffy the Vampire Slayer (according to Wikipedia).

I have spent the last bit of time answering the challenge of a friend who dared me to read her steampunk series. I have loved her other books because her characters are so likeable. I tried this one out and yes, my science center is offended by steampunk but again, her characters grabbed me into the story. Right now she’s trying a serialized book and I’m hooked. Brand new Jim Butcher Dresden File book, Skin Game. Oh Emm GEEEE!

Mine just arrived yesterday, but I haven’t started it yet!

I had mine downloaded on my Kindle at 12:01 AM LOL, you can bet I dived right in

His E-Books are so dang expensive!

I borrowed the series from someone the first time through, and wanted to buy them myself and the pricing is all screwed up.

You missed out last week! Amazon had the kindle versions of the first 8 books of the series for $1.99 each.

Mr. TM’s should arrive today or tomorrow, but I’m hiding it until we go on vacation at the end of June - it’s his “vacation book”.

I have to admit, I tried reading the first one and just couldn’t get into it, but he loves them. He actually has a 'Fozare" pin I made signed by Jim Butcher from a con I did a couple of years ago - I’ll try and remember to post a pic tonight.
