I really enjoyed the first 2 seasons; need to watch the 3rd, but waiting until I have time to binge at least part of it. Some of it moves a little slow, but that helps get into it, because it’s a show you have to pay attention to or you’ll get lost/confused later.
Anyone watching Carnival Row?
It’s Amazon’s “Let’s talk about racism, but with faeries and quasi-victorian fantasy.”
The plot is a little muddled, but it’s not bad.
See above.
Fair enough.
I think I might like Carnival Row better if it was just “London, but there’s gates to Fairyland” instead of also hinting at this complex and ‘complete’ world that seems to have produced a single large “Not-London” of the Burgue (or however it’s spelled).
I’m also kind of ‘meh’ about the political subplots. The falling-Upper Class dealign with the wealthy neighbor being a Satyr plot is good. The police investigator and his refugee ex-girlfriend is good. The nobles are kind of just there.
They could have made it run a lot longer, but they didn’t think they were getting more than one season and tried to finish a few things before they ran out of episodes. In that respect, it’s a pity that they got renewed!
Apparently we’re not the only country that is remaking old television shows. I just started watching a remake of Kimi wa Petto. We’ll see how it measures up to the original. I really, really liked Matsumoto Jun and Kato Koyuki in the original series. You may have seen Kato Koyuki in Blood: the Last Vampire.
Since the normal season of OTA has run out, and our carefully hoarded recording as well, we’ve been looking around.
Found this on the CW, which is looking pretty good:
It’s tough to follow sometimes, though, as the characters all speak in what I take to be normal Brit speak, which is slang to our US ears… and it rapidly slurs togeveh.
Modern Cockney, I guess.
My $Wife and I watch a good bit of British TV: She loves the period dramas and such, and we’ve branched into other genres. There’s several shows that the accents can be totally opaque at times, especially if a character is excited or meant to be the ‘elderly rural stereotype’ or similar.
Admittedly, I remember when The Wire was big it drew complaints as it had a lot of native Baltimore accents, which is it’s own weird micro-accent.
I watch a lot of those with CC on. Especially the gardening shows and such where there are fewer context clues.
Also, how bad is the sex and nudity in Carnival Row? I was thinking my youngest might enjoy it.
There’s some nudity, subtype female & winged. Often paired with sex. I’d probably say mature adults, but that’s just my opinion.
If you haven’t seen Sex Education, you are seriously missing out. It also has a killer soundtrack.
ST:TOS with Ookson. Yesterday it was “The Corbomite Manoeuver” and tonight it’s “Mudd’s Women”.
My faves are said Corbomite Manoeuver and City on the Edge of Forever.
City on the Edge of Forever is one of the best episodes. My favorite is still Amok Time, though.
On my old BlackBerry, I had a hotkey programmed to play a clip of the fight music. In this video, it starts around 95 seconds in… https://youtu.be/Ml4wAnvfM4M
My best ST:TOS story involves almost being kicked out of a Los Vegas casino because a friend wanted a picture with a Gorn.
Inside the Actors Studio moved from Bravo to Ovation, so they’re showing some of the old episodes. The new version is still part interview, but it has more of a conversational feel because it’s one actor talking with another, starting of with Alec Baldwin interviewing Henry Winkler. Kind of like Robert Rodriguez with his The Director’s Chair on his El Rey Network.
They kept Bernard Pivot’s questionnaire, but now a member of the audience is the one that asks the questions to the featured actor.
I’m not really happy with the new season of Supergirl. It isn’t because they gave her pants for her new costume, either.
It has just gotten too much and too little at the same time.
We’re watching Peaky Blinders. First season was pretty good, but I’ve somehow totally tuned out to it now. It’s on, and I remember watching it, but just can’t care. I feel bad saying it; It’s a very well-made show, but I just have no attachment to almost all of the characters.
Watched the first episode of Watchmen on HBO last weekend. They’re going with the comic book ending, not the movie, and the story has been bumped forward to the present day. It’s pretty interesting, if a bit dark.
