Hell, I appreciate having someone I can talk, or argue, this shit out with. He’s a valued resource at this point. Someone that I know isn’t a total idiot that disagrees with my opinion. If CWX were in town I’d loan him a couch.
Part of it is because while I disagree with him on a lot, at least he has reasons for most of it, not just feels. And if it is based on feels then he comes out with it. Not saying I’m looking for a new boy toy, but I’d call him a friend.
The police are not releasing pictures or the name of the 16 year old, but Fox not only names him, but also photos? And one of the photos also has all of the juvenile victims in it.
I understand that they have rules and such about not releasing the names of minors, but let’s be realistic here. If you name the parents, the older brother, and the age of the other kid arrested, there’s no way people won’t know who it is. It’s not exactly rocket surgery.
I’m not sure what the government could have been doing differently that would have protected those recruiters. And the person quoted made it sound like the government was actively refusing to protect the recruiters from future attacks.
Exactly. The government that can be everywhere and protect everyone is not one that I want to live under. You can’t eliminate all risk. You can’t prevent this from ever happening. Any plan predicated on that goal is going to fail.
That’s what bugs me about these guys. They want the government to stay out of their lives as much as possible (and then some), but when they want something, they better have it right now (if not sooner).
Consistency is the defense of small minds, I guess, and good smoothies.
Same people who think if you take guns away everyone will get along. And think if America could just be nicer there wouldn’t be any wars anymore. Or if you just talk to the rapist they’ll stop.
That Broken Arrow killing is some crazy shit. What could make two of them do it, I could see one, but two brothers killing the whole family? Doing it quickly, before the police got there, but also taking the time to switch weapons? Nightmare material.
Oh, right. I had that backwards. It’s the people that don’t defend other people that think everyone would be safe if we could all just be nice to each other.
Frankly, the definition of a good government should be something that stays out of my way as much as possible, but provides what I want/need ASAP.
Seriously, while some of these people are total yahoos, they are accomplishing more than a twitter campaign would. Shows of solidarity are worth it when you are potentially sacrificing something to show it.
And while I can see that you don’t take it seriously I’ll bet a lot of these people are, and so are the people they are guarding. I think it’s closing the barn door after the chickens are hatched, but it’s a legitimate issue of concern. We’ve now had three attacks against military personnel that couldn’t be defended against according to federal law. Hood, Naval Office, and this.
This would be like pro choice protestors hanging around abortion clinics to stop bombers or anti abortion protestors from shaming young women (Does anyone do this?). Just like those bikers block the Westboro crazies.
I suspect some of the people guarding armories and recruiters are loonies. And some of them are well-meaning people who probably haven’t thought it entirely through. And maybe some are quite clever and have thought it through–and you’ll never see videos of the latter two groups, so I can only postulate their existence.
I don’t want to be issued a weapon for my office job. I don’t want to have armed guards floating our building. I do want our base security to stop being a joke, and I want the same rights and responsibilities to carry concealed on base that I have everywhere else I go.
I think the law should read in such a way that if you are disarming me then you are responsible for my safety. I’m cool with being disarmed in a court house, almost everyone is, and there are methods to keep weapons out. But in a movie theater it’s just a sign.
Of course, that would assume that I carry now, something I’m not doing. I need to get my permit and take a couple classes. I can kill some pieces of paper dead, but I’m seriously concerned I’d stripe my own leg trying to get a pistol out of a holster and engage a threat.
Defending oneself while a crime is occurring is left to the citizen. It’s not a responsibility of the police. Even the Supreme Court agrees. Protecting oneself is what the Second Amendment is all about.
So now Huffpo is supporting the 2nd amendment. Bloomberg needs to spend another couple dozen million on another grassroots organization.
The thing is, and this person seems to not know this. The Fire Department spends a lot of time on education and how to take care of yourself. The days a fireman go to an elementary school and tell kids about fire safety, the PSAs on how to put out a grease fire. The advice on smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The Fire Departments have gotten so good at helping people take care of themselves, along with building code advice, that they hardly even work on house fires any more.
For the police to operate like the Fire Department that means that for smaller issues the citizen takes care of it themselves. So, education on how not to look like a victim, how to carry your things, look out for criminals. Advice on burglar alarms, mandated burglar alarms in some areas. Working with families on a home invasion plan, helping inventory valuables. And last but not least, police department directed self defense and weapons training.
He also needs to double check his history. During the time period of the WWW, cities like New York, Chicago, and Boston had street patrols, hell medieval cities had street patrols. And even in those wild west towns, the sheriff or a deputy would go get lunch, check his horse, walk to the livery store and bullshit with people for hours, not like they just hid in the Jail. Unless Clint Eastwood was coming.
And 66 in a 55 is not a victimless crime if they cause an accident.
