COVID-19 stuff

My state’s also part of the dine-in restriction and schools closed for at least six weeks. That’s going to put more of a strain on grocery stores as people have to start packing lunches instead of going to a nearby restaurant. Or, you’ll see the drive-through with longer lines.

Packing lunches has always been a better option from a personal financial sense.

Plus you know what’s gone into that lunch box…

I read back through the announcement on a news website and missed the part about places like fitness clubs and movie theaters are included in the shutdown. I wanted to go see a movie, I’d have to do it tonight. But I already have other things I have to do, so that’s out anyway.

If he paid $4 for them and it’s $10 to ship them then it’s not price gouging to charge $16, or even $18.

There is a fine line on issues like price gouging that people don’t like to notice. The end result of banning people like this guy is that all those anti bacs are off the market. And won’t go back on, since if he even tries to break even he’ll still be “price gouging”.

Just like generators during a storm, if I run down there with my pickup with four generators in the back of it, charging double might make me a couple hundred once you factor in time and fuel, not to mention the danger of getting the product there to begin with. It’s the price gouging when there is no actual shortage that’s just based on potential fear of a shortage.

We’ve had this conversation on here a couple times, but my stance is still sometimes higher prices are good in a disaster.

In other news, they are talking about closing restaurants here, this I think is a step way too far. I like the half capacity rule, but enough people are losing their jobs, we don’t need to add to it. Plenty of people out there can’t really cook or provide for themselves. Also, carving out fast food takeout makes little to no sense.

My wife’s office is work from home till the end of the month starting today.

And idiots like this are going to kill us.

My work have decided to look at work from home.

Manglement is busy with processing data, and we will get final orders and decisions on this Friday.

It just makes sense to minimize the impact of this.

I saw an article somewhere that advocated not wearing a mask, because people tend to frequently adjust it, which means they’re poking around their face, especially near the eyes.

Same here. I’ve done the odd day here and there when I wasn’t feeling well, or when I had an appointment out here and it was easier than leaving work really early, but I’ve never done more than a day at home. I actually went out and bought a monitor yesterday since I find it easier to do work stuff with more than one screen (monitor + laptop). Apparently I’m not the only one - the place I went said they’d had a run on monitors from people being told to stay home.

The one big thing I’m doing to try and keep “work” and “home” separate (aside from not having a cider during the day  ) is to actually get dressed, albeit in jeans and a sweater rather than business attire, in the morning and not work in my pjs or sweats. “Dressed” = “work”, “lounging outfit” = “home”.

According to the article, his prices was $20 each for a bottle that costs $1 in the stores. He used $16 in his example. So, even if shipping is $10, that’s still a 900% markup (500% on his example). And he deliberately bought every single bottle so no one else could buy any, thus artificially providing the market. Sorry, he is a profiteer.

We’ve had some pushback, but one thing that’s been suggested for our group is that the daily ‘standups’ are mandatory camera-on time. There’s been pushback to this, of course, but I’m goign to rearrange my setup to be on-camera for it if I have to: My current home setup is such that my laptop is behind me while I’m working on my big screen via a KVM rig. I have cables on-order to make it easier to work around this.

I’ve also suggested we should make it standard to update a wiki page with a table with where we are from day to day.

This seems silly for a couple days, but we’re looking at a couple weeks… Or more.

We had nearly half the team in today: At least one guy wanted some quiet time away from his kids, I think. But that can’t last. Especially as restaurants are going carry-out only as of tonight.

From what I understand, you should wear a mask if you are sick. This helps keep your germs to yourself if you cough or sneeze. Unless it is perfectly fitted, it doesn’t do a lot to keep you from catching anything.

Oh, and…
San Francisco County, City of Berkeley, Santa Clara County, Marin County, Alameda County, San Mateo County and Contra Costa County just put a mandatory shelter in place order into effect.

Good correction, thanks.

My work is having a test work-from-home day on Friday, in preparation for a possible permanent situation.
I have anticipated that a bit as I am now working from home indefinitely. It was my choice though as my daughter is currently on 2 immuno-suppressants and has a compromised immune system as a result. I normally take public transport to and from work and that would be a huge risk factor for her. Apparently I was the first one to ask to work from home (I sent an email on Saturday), but by the time I spoke to my bosses on Monday afternoon there were at least 5 others who had asked the same thing.

My wife is a teacher so that is going to be a lot harder to manage as kids are a grotty bunch. She is doing what she can with hand sanitiser and anti-bacterial wipes.

Four major theater chains in the US and two in Canada are now closed. As of tonight, the only holdout is Cinemark. They’ll probably decide to close Tuesday or Wednesday. Actually, they might not have the choice with that new guideline about no gatherings of over 10 people.

I put more info about this in a blog over at the Moviepedia Wiki.

Total lockdown on restaurants and bars here aside from takeaway.

I had to get some cat food and litter yesterday and an HDMI cable for the laptop to connect it to the older monitor (27") I had just replaced. I bought it over 10 years ago, and it’s still better than the ones I have at work. It’ll be just fine. There are some bars until it warms up, but I’m used to it.

I shifted my hours voluntarily to start at noon. This puts less of a burden on the verification system and VPN. I get points with the higher-ups for initiating this. It isn’t like I have anything else to do, anyway. It gives me a chance to go out for a walk in the morning to help keep active, and have a shower before getting to work. It’s a new kind of schedule for me. I think that all of the changes together help make a conscious collection to concentrate my workflow. Plus, I really only have to work for about 4 hours a day now because nobody has anything after 4pm. I’m working smarter, not harder. I can just check my email every hour after then to see if anything critical has come up.

This times 1,000!

Plus his gas to drive to these places, plus Amazon’s share, plus storage costs, and his time. And he bought what wasn’t being bought already and sold it to people who wanted it.

Now, you can’t get any on Amazon at any price, I see this as a negative ending. (Actually I looked it up now, you can buy some, but it’s $18+ for bath and body works stuff, and $8+ for 1.7 oz bottles available April 7-28th.

The actions of the State and Amazon pulled 17,000 bottles of anti bac off the market. Now they’ll be haphazardly distributed by a local church and likely sit in a storage unit for months.

That’s assigning the worst possible motive to his actions. Another way to look at the same action is simple arbitrage, people in one area didn’t want a good, so he purchased it and provided it to an area that did. Even at the $70 price or a $20 price obviously someone wanted it more than they wanted the money.

And that’s assigning the best possible motive to his actions. He didn’t buy 100 bottles and wait a few days/weeks to see if there was any left. He bought it all at the same time.

Agreed, and I think there is a moral point to be made here, but it shouldn’t be a legal one.
