Gardening, harvesting, storing, and the like

Ready for planting. I’m sore and very tired. I’ve moved a lot of dirt in the last few days.

Seriously considering do this next year rather than actual beds. And maybe herbs or something in the small sections idk. But this looks so much better. And we can decorate the blocks as desired.

Those small blocks are good for all kinds of stuff. I put green onions, spinach, radishes, daikon, carrots, and lettuce in them. You could put flowers in them too.

I put broccoli, spaghetti squash, beets, and turnips in the main beds.

DS20 really wants a garden next year, and I do too, but neither of us want the big weeding hassle. This should help with that. Also should be able to easily hook up the electric fence around it for the deer. And around here I should be able to get blocks cheap or free.

I’ve been planning to make a bunch of these. I guess we’ll see how it goes. I suppose I’ve got all winter to get them made, but doing concrete form work in the cold has its own problems.

My call duck eggs are shipping today!

Call duck egg on day 4 of incubation. It’s alive!

I just candled all of the eggs. Out of 14, 10 are definitely developing, 1 I threw away because it certainly wasn’t and had a micro crack. That leaves 3 that I’m not certain on, but probably aren’t viable. That’s really good for shipped eggs.

Edit: One more egg is showing development. That’s 11 out of 14 shipped eggs. I threw away one that was definitely dead today. I have one left that I’m not 100% sure of, but I suspect that I’ll be throwing it out tomorrow.

Lockdown today, hatch date should be on Tuesday.

Dang it, I got a second batch of call duck eggs, and they should have hatched a few days ago. I must be doing something wrong.

On the good side, though, my first batch of quail chicks that hatched in April are laying, and though 14 out of 18 chicks were boys, 6 of them sure tasted good and 6 more are in the freezer. I’ll get to start harvesting the extra boys from the next hatch in a few weeks.

I’m starting to drool and get impatient. I want to harvest now!

The top photo is obviously corn, but what’s the second one? Eggplant?

Tomato. Hssiao his hung shih. They are the sweetest, most delicious tomato ever! I found seeds once and decided to try them. I have never found the seed again, so I save some every year for the next year.

I have given up on a garden this year yet again. I’m focusing on getting the landscape beds dealt with. Mulch coming tomorrow so now my ADHD brain has a deadline :woman_facepalming:t3:

Surprise. It’s already been delivered. Since the air conditioning guys are here installing I’m not exactly sure where they put the mulch but I guess I’ll find out later. :woman_facepalming:t3:

My tomatoes have been ripening 2 or 3 at a time. Very few have made it into the house because I see them and pop them into my mouth because they’re just too good!

I know we’ve had discussions about bees before. Can’t find them right now. Here’s an article about how bees had to be rounded up after an accident when about 40 hives were be transported.

An “accident”. Yeah, right.
Those bees wanted to get out.

Much better result than what happens when a semi bites it. 400 hives get foamed by the fire department more often than not.

My apples are ripe, so I picked a bunch today. My friends and I snacked on some, and I have a pan of apple crumble in the oven now.
