Gardening, harvesting, storing, and the like

That’s the plan.

Bummer! Good luck with the new batch.

My latest batch of quail just paid for themselves. I posted an ad on craigslist just to see if there would be any bites. I deliberately posted kind of a high price. I sold 20 birds this morning.

New tomato seedlings took ages to sprout, but they finally did.

Going to plant them out into a small container and let them grow stronger first.

$wife planted some tomato seeds directly into the soil outside, she already have a couple good plants. /me est jelly.

Ah well, different strokes…

I started “making room” for new birds this weekend. The oldest birds I have are from my 2nd hatch (I sold the first hatch). They’re about six months old. My youngest batch are about 6 weeks old now. I thought that all six birds from my 3rd hatch were hens because they were quiet and got along well with each other very well.

A red bird from my second hatch started crowing. So, he went away. Then I took a good look at my oldest birds and realized that out of 5 birds, I was getting 2 eggs. The rooster from that bunch had not produced a single fertile egg. So he went away and got replaced by a younger model. I separated out a hen and still got two eggs from the pen, so she went away. Last night I separated out another hen, still got two eggs, so she went away.

I now have three falb fee hens, 2 birds that I hope are hens from my 3rd hatch, and a new silver boy in the pen. I hope to start getting more eggs, including some fertile ones now.

Loudmouth from my youngest hatch is probably going to go next. I heard another bird trying to crow out of the youngster pen this morning, so loudmouth isn’t needed.

I plan to start brining some birds this afternoon.

I find that oddly entertaining.

I have about 25 birds now. I’m going to have to reduce that to about 10, especially since I have more eggs arriving tomorrow.

Mine didn’t work out as well as yours. I’m either planting them too deep or too close together.

I’m available for children’s parties.

Ate our first blackberries, and they were quite nice.

Hopefully the plants will start to produce more berries going forward. Glad to know that the plants will thrive in clay soil.

I got 9 eggs today!

I’m also down to a reasonable number of birds (16 total). I’ll be back into the unreasonable number later this week, though since I have 62 eggs in the incubator now. 5 are infertile or early quitters, but that still leaves a potential of 57 chicks. 0_0

Edit: I’m finally getting more eggs than I will eat in a day.

Oh, and I have 27 button quail eggs due to hatch on Monday. I don’t know what I’m going to do with those.

Two button quail hatched so far. They’re about the size of a quarter.

I think I had a bad hatch. No new eggs hatched since yesterday afternoon. I have a total of four now out of 27 egg. I’m happy with four, though. I have no idea what I would have done with 20 or more.

The coturnix hatch made up for the button hatch. I still have 6 unpipped eggs in the incubator and a physical therapy chick that may need to be culled, but right now I have 49 out of 62 eggs. 60 of those were shipped eggs which usually have closer to a 50% hatch rate.

These guys are a mixed fee batch, Falb Fee, Grau Fee, and Pansy Fee.

Getting into gardening mode. I was planning on starting my seeds yesterday, but I didn’t get to it. I got step one done today, though. Get the quail off of the garden bed! If I feel energetic later I might turn my compost and compost the beds.

Got my seeds started in the mini greenhouse. Not feeling the turning of the compost yet. I did hoe up about 2/3 of the bed the quail were in, though.

OMG, I have ooodles of beeees!

This is my first hive to get through the winter, so far, and they are insane. I was getting in there to treat for mites and I was expecting like three or four frames of lazy bees overwintering. Instead I found slightly less than that, so I thought I’d check the bottom box to see if they had any honey left and it was full of bees. It looks like an early summer hive in there. So now I just have to keep them alive long enough until they can feed themselves.

This is exciting!

That is exciting! It’s good to see bees thriving.

I may have started some of my seeds too early. My yard long beans and zucchini are already sprouting. They’re in my mini greenhouse, but I may need to get some bigger starter pots to move them into.
