Observations **

I’m using the “like post” button a lot because I agree with a lot these posts. It warms my heart to see the staff here concerned about the PM issue. The ability to read PMs can be abused, and it’s nice to know you’re not comfortable with the idea.

I find it interesting that we don’t seem to have the number of spammers manually sign up here as we do on CoG. In fact, I haven’t seen one yet. Is the automatic blocking that much better, or is it just that this board is much harder to find?

I think it’s just that much harder to find, at least for now.

I’ve noticed that items that I read on one computer are bold (as in not read) when I log in from a different computer. That’s kind of a pain, since it makes it hard to see at a glance what I’ve already read.

Read state should be persistent across computers—that’s stored server side, not client side. If you have the time and can reproduce it on meta.discourse.org or try.discourse.org, let me know and I’ll get a bug report filed ASAP.

Okay. I just took a screen shot from my computer here at work with everything in grey, marked as read. I’ll take another screen shot from home where subjects will be in different colours, later ones in blue, earlier topics in grey.

Well, ok, hang on—link colors will be different, because that’s a function of your web browser. Should be like that on every site on the web, since that’s just your web browser showing a different color for visited vs. unvisited links.

The forum should keep track of your read state, though, without caring about the link color display. IOW, topics you’re tracking or that are new should get badges (a little unread number for tracked topics, or an asterisk badge for new topics). I’d recommend popping into your profile settings and changing “Consider topics new when” to “I haven’t viewed them yet”, and changing “Automatically track topics I enter” to “always”. That way, you’ll get eyes on everything that gets posted in every topic.

Comparing the two screenshots, it looks like my computer at work isn’t tracking the links I’ve viewed, but my system at home is.

I just changed my preferences to have it show a topic as not read if I haven’t read it yet. We’ll see if that makes a difference.

I think it’s the metrics analyst in me, but I see all those lovely categories at the top of the latest view, and I want to click on them to sort by them. It would be neat to see which topics have the most likes, posts, views, etc without having to go hunt for it.

I went to create a new topic today under General, but it came out under Blog. I was then unable to edit the category. I tried this a couple of times, then finally created the new topic under Trusted, and then changed it to General. It was odd.

That is a bit odd. Lemme take a look.

Login weirdness. For the last couple of days, I’ve logged in, but the board doesn’t show that I’m logged in. I end up having to log in, change screens, then log in again. This has happened on both my home and work computers now, both using Firefox.

For example, this morning I logged in, then went to reply to this thread, and had to log in again in order to actually reply.

Noticing that too. Will see about fixing this afternoon!

OK, should be behaving a little better now.

Seems to be working okay at work, but I just had the same thing happen here at home. I’ll try a shift+refresh and see if that helps.

Okay, and now I just had another weirdness. When I reply to a message, instead of hitting “back” on my browser, I usually click on the topic, then click on the Bigdinosaur discussion link. I just clicked on “Observations” which took me to the top of the subject, but the Bigdinosaur discussion link didn’t show up. It’s still Observations".

Edit: And when I did the same thing after this reply, it worked. Maybe it’s just this computer.

Still having the login issue from my work computer as well.

Edit: Also, I just clicked “Observations” to get back to the top, and when I got to the top, it didn’t give me the Bigdinosaur discussion link.

Edit again: The second time, (after I edited this message) it functioned normally.

No matter how often I click “Observations” it doesn’t give me the top level link. Hitting the down arrow at that point will however cause it to appear instead of “Observations”.

I’m seeing the same thing. I also had to log in twice before it actually logged me in.

Yeah, something they introduced in the past few days has honked up the login functionality. It’s getting better, but it’s not licked yet. I just applied the latest set of updates, so we’ll see what it does.
