Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

So, those vague, vacuous, vapid, vexatious, venal vegetables are nothing but a vacuum?

We have a winner.

A few years ago, Rite Aid seemed to have a competition going with Walgreens to see who could open the most stores. I was pretty sure they were going to be the latest in what I called ā€œgrow and dieā€ businesses. These are the ones that expand so fast that it catches up with them and they go out of business.

It actually just happened with the Haggen grocery stores. A couple of years ago, they bought Top Food & Drug and had just over two dozen stores. By last year, they had 18.

Then came the opportunity to buy 146 Albertsons and Safeway stores when those two were forced to sell them as a condition of merging. They paid $300 million for the stores and quite a bit to remodel/rebrand all of them.

Last month, Haggen sued Albertsons for sabotaging the sale and what appears to be basically lying about inventory and prices on the stores that were being bought. Inventory was shuffled around so that some stores were understocked and others were overstocked with perishable items. Customers went into the store one day when it was an Albertsons and an item was one price, then was an Haggen, the same item was a higher price.

The Haggen lawsuit is for $1 billion. Albertsons sued them for $41.1 million, which hadnā€™t paid on the inventory.

Thereā€™s a whole lot more to the situation, and about Albertsonsā€™ tactics, but the result is Haggen has filed for bankrupty and did suffer from ā€œgrown and dieā€. And Iā€™m pretty sure this story on NotAlwaysRight.com is about them.

Is it wrong that I donā€™t get Taylor Swift? Her music just sounds like 80s/90s overproduced generic pop crap. Whatā€™s the big deal?

I do not have a clue.

Because she has a breakup song for everyone. From the sad teenager to the angry jilted gf/bf, itā€™s inclusive. And while she may be a nice person doing lots of nice things, her music is annoying.

I like it.

I have an 8 year old girl, Iā€™ll throw on Taylor and Katy in a heartbeat before Nikki or Miley.

Plus I can learn the words in like two minutes.

Genre, artist, culture asideā€¦ I ALWAYS prefer lyrics I can understand and (if I desire) sing.

I guess I can kind of buy that, but thereā€™s a podcast I listen where all 3 hosts (female) are obsessed with ā€œTayTayā€ and at least 2/3 of them (both in their mid 30s) appear to be in happy, committed, long-term relationships. Thus, no need for a breakup song. One of them flew cross-country just to see her in concert, for cryinā€™ out loud!

BTW, the Cubs might actually win the 2015 World Series. Out of all the things to be absolutely true from BttF II, that wasnā€™t on my top of wishes.

As much as Iā€™m not interested in baseball, that happening would be awesome.

A record 6 home runs last night in a post season game. There is something to be said for believing itā€™s your year.

As I told an ex-roommate once, I prefer music that isnā€™t a cat-fight between the musicians and the vocalist.

Hell, Funker Vogt is punk/industrial, and I can hear and understand all the lyrics.

Why does American football require so much armor, but rugby doesnā€™t?

I just caught a video from the Rugby World Cup - those guys seem to have a lot more fun than the NFL.

Putting on my hacker hatā€¦ thatā€™s a double edged sword. I agree that itā€™s frustrating and they should tell you, but on the flip side, if I know what your requirements are I can narrow a brute force attack at it to be done sooner. Thereā€™s a good chance that if a password requires a number, itā€™s at the end of the password. First letters are usually capitalized. Just those two things alone helps cut down on the time it takes for a brute force attack. Itā€™s a fine line between security and usabilityā€¦

Football would have fewer career ending injuries with less armor, but more icky ones. Weā€™ve shown that weā€™re cool with someone totally detaching a set of tendons and muscles from their knee, but not cool with broken bones.

Madden has a rant about the armoring up of American Football thatā€™s worth a listen. You give a guy a car crash resistant steel cage on his head and expect him not to hit someone as hard as he can with it?

Well, the thunderstorm they sent out the warning about is here (and a small dog is trying to crawl into my ankle)ā€¦ Iā€™m really really hoping they were wrong about the hail.

I have to be the only person in the world who has to train his dog into getting up on the furniture.

The authorities are expecting more incidents like this. As several naturalists have already stated, itā€™s a double-whammy of El Nino and climate change.

Why did I only find out about Wasteland 2 Directors Cut from my friend writing a review of it for the local gamespaper? I must go play it immediately!
