Refurb Samsung note 7 emits smoke

The way I read it in a different article yesterday, they’re offing $100 bonus if you buy another Samsung device, or $25 bonus if you by a non-Samsung device, in addition to refunding the purchase price, as an incentive to get people to actually come in and comply with the recall.

Not part of the recall, but…

Makes one wonder what is Samsung trying to accomplish… (this ad is from a cellc brochure)

On an entirely unrelated note : have resuscitated my Nokia 5230. Will use it for calls and SMSes

Looks like a carrier is trying to move some cheaper/older models while getting people locked into multi-line contracts… what does the fine print say?

Will have to check the fine print. But now that you’ve mentioned it - older models, par for the course.

Carrier maybe got overstock, and is now trying to get rid of it all.

We have a massive overstock of the J3 as well. I don’t think it’s a carrier thing, I think every time Samsung saw an order for 100 units they decided to send 100,000 units or something stupid.

They’re being sold as “OAP friendly”. Because nothing says “suitable for those with poor motor skills, fading eyesight, and hearing problems” like a smartphone with confusing software and really finicky screens…

The FAA has now grounded all Note 7s.

Folks, be very thankful that you are not a TSA agent havening to explain to a passenger (and more than one to boot) that their preciouses note 7 arent allowed on any kind of airliner.

There will be lots of fireworks.

You’re obviously unaware of how the TSA works.
This will be seen as a great opportunity to inconvenience people and get them riled up. There will be no explanations, it will be “that’s the rules, if you argue we’ll arrest you”.

Most of my calls today were S7 and S7 Edge owners asking if they had to return their phones too.

It was so - very - freakin’ - boring.

Durr, I gots big shiny thing, but I dinna ken what exactly it is…

The implication of my post was meant to highlight just what will happen if TSA agents misidentify your device and tell you that your nexus2012 (or whichever non-note7 device) is verboten

Imagine you have a 14-month old huawei smartphone which’s perfectly safe, and they decide otherwise…

At long last - ACSA (Airports Company South Africa) started to do something…

Samsung issued the statement of what caused the problems with the Note 7. The original problem was caused by the outer casing pinching the battery. The problem with the supposedly fixed phones came from the batteries themselves.

How much did this cost them? According to CNN back in October, an 8% drop in their stock price, dropping their worth by $19 billion, and a projected loss of $17 billion in revenue. It’s also cost them the money it took to develop their new “8-Point Battery Safety Check” process that will be used across their entire manufacturing line, which includes things like using an X-ray machine to check for abnormalities. Then we add in the loss of their reputation, which means decreased future sales.

How much of this could have been prevented by applying the “10% rule”? Got a good design? Make it 10% better or check it 10% more.

Oh, but wait. That would cost money to do the research and testing. It’s better to wind up losing over $30 billion dollars than to spend $1 million up front.

Penny wise, pound foolish?

Yup, sounds familiar, same situation with Ford and their Kuga’s in South Africa. (Ford Escape model catching fire spontaneously).

FWIW, my Escape never so much as smoldered.
