Though I am not a Buckeye by blood, only by marriage, this has hit pretty hard. I worked in the athletic department of a Big Ten school, with football players, and can only imagine what these kids are going through. Add to that the OSU wrestling team, since he wrestled for three years as well. We as a nation really need to get some funding into mental health, as so many people suffer from it. And these problems happen at younger and younger ages. We had to sit a player a few weeks ago during a basketball game because he was exhibiting concussion-like symptoms after falling to the court for a loose ball. He’s 7. And the parents weren’t the happiest with us. So many mental health issues to deal with, and so many causes. Hopefully the recent slew of high-profile cases will help shed some light on the subject.

So did half of America just walk around brain damaged before? Or is organized play more dangerous than telling your kids to leave the house and not come back till the street lights come on?

It seems like there are more concussions, and broken limbs and everything else with these ā€œsupervisedā€ play events than there were before. My friends and I used to jump out of trees, and climb up on the roofs of houses and carports and jump off. And none of us have had half the injuries your average softball team racks up in a season.

Just got more details. Suicide. I was afraid of that.

A real waste.

That is awful. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.

My father committed suicide, and I’ve never understood it. Apparently depression runs on that side of the family, though…

Yeah, I just had to rant at my therapist. So many people don’t seek help for depression, because they face so much bullshit about it. People who don’t know jack about mental illness should have their mouths bricked up.

I’m tired of hearing ā€œOh, well, just cheer upā€, ā€œwhat do you have to be sad about?ā€, or lame pseudo-sympathy of ā€œyeah, me too, the store is out of haagen dazsā€. Sad != depression. This is why suicide is on the rise, kids have gotten the message that sad=depression=suicide.

My dad suffered from clinical depression. He went in to his doctor because he couldn’t sleep and the doctor gave him a 90 day supply of sleeping pills.

My dad didn’t sleep for the next like three or four days staring at that bottle. And then Dad went away for while after disintegrating while playing a board game with me. Four months in the mental ward after 9 years of clinical depression.

Joe Cocker died this morning at age 70 from lung cancer.

Feeling alright
I’m not feeling too good myself

I’m not feeling that good myself

Hope he enjoys his change of scene,

The 120GB SSD on which resided my operating system. At least my data is all on another drive.

My condolences. Is it possible the company might replace it, at least?

It was an almost new hand-me-down from my father, who probably obtained it from questionable, cut-rate untraceable sources. He’s weird like that.

Mario Cuomo, 82

I remember his Two Cities speech. Still gives me chills.

Eric Cunningham, as prophesied, 65

Maybe DeBlasio will take this moment to get things under control.

Seeing the number of shootings or other attacks on police in the past 72 hours, I don’t think he has a moment.

Stuart Scott, ESPN sportscaster. Can’t find an obit but they’ve pre-empted Sports Center this morning for the info…

Here you are.
