Perhaps if the Californian law enforcement investigate Joe Biden he’ll reinstate the federal aid? They would be totally unrelated things of course.
Kincade Fire Statistics:
77,758 Acres burned
80% Containment
374 Structures destroyed
4,032 Firefighters
$23 million Firefighting cost
4 Injuries
I don’t know, did Joe put one of his kids on PG&E 's board?
Ouch. That is not nice.
I’m going to be grateful to see 80% containment and only 4 injuries with no deaths. At it’s peak we had over 5,000 firefighters out here. Those guys are true heroes.
Agreed, they don’t get due recognition.
For those of you out of the loop, most of Australia’s east coast is on fire, and there have been extreme heat conditions for most of the past month (up north in NSW and QLD).
There are also fires in West Australia, and near Adelaide (South Australia).
There aren’t any fires near me, but we got a huge load of smoke today from Sydney’s fires. @moufassa is in Adelaide, so I hope he and his family are safe…
I don’t know how accurate this site’s data is, but if it is…
My carpool work buddy’s sister is in the fire zones. She was evacuated, but went back to save her home. Apparently her home is safe, but is surrounded by burned areas.
It’s made our national news a time or two.
Fingers crossed for our (really) Southern friends.
Very tough times here.
We are safe from bushfire, but I know a fair number who live much closer.
I’m glad you’re safe. My thoughts are with those who live closer to the fires.
Thanks all.
The fires have been downgraded to a Watch and Act but the last I saw, there had been 86 homes lost, somewhere around 220 outbuildings (sheds etc) and many thousands of hectares reduced to charcoal. One of my friends messaged me yesterday to say that they are safe, but the fires came within 500m of her sister’s block of land. No house there yet but gee that is scary.
At least one winery has lost all of their vines (but the buildings, stores and family home were spared - so that’s something at least).
That’s not good at all. Is she in Sydney or Adelaide?
Adelaide area, I think. She’s still safe, but pretty much everything around her is burned.
@Nabiki, when you see your carpool buddy next please pass on my heartfelt sympathies - nobody should have to physically defend their own home. Very glad she and her home are safe.
I’m sure he’ll be glad for the thoughts. I’ll tell him.
The fires have reached Melbourne: Clicky-Linky
Check some of the various links on that site. It’s pretty apocalyptic.
Jebus. Be safe, man. Those pics remind me of what we had here in San Diego in 2003 and 2007. When the fire starts generating its own weather, shit has hit the fan.
Oz is a damned big place. So unless a fire manages to jump a number of major roads and suburbs, we will be fine.
The Mallacoota fire is about a 6 hour drive east of here, and the winds are/were pushing it eastwards towards the ocean.
The weather has also changed - it was 42 degrees C (108 Fahrenheit) here yesterday with a very strong northerly wind. It’s now 15 degrees C (58F) with bands of rain.
To give an idea of how big the fires are, the “usual” burnt area for the entire fire season is 280,000 hectares (692K acres, 1080 square miles). We’re currently sitting at 3.41 million burnt hectares (8.43M acres, 13170 square miles), and the fire season is only half over.
