What game are you playing today?

I’m getting closer to saying some harsh reality things to the roommate’s pet. His hours have been cut at his retail job, and I really, really want to tell him that maybe he should consider getting some skills or a career.

This looks kind of … I don’t know. Is fun the word I’m looking for?
Anyway, it’s free.

Got some googly play credit for a game, book or movie.

Decisions, decisions…

If anyone is considering starting to play Pokemon Go or has played but hasn’t in the last 3 months, you can use this code to get 100 pokeballs and rewards for milestones as you complete them. I’ll get the rewards too.

I may have been out of the loop for a while. I just found out that Starcraft 2 Terran missions are now free to play.
Also, if you enjoyed the original version as much as I did, there are 3 things to look at.

  1. The original version is also free to play.
  2. You can pay $20 to get a version with updated graphics.
  3. You can pay $40 to get the cartoon graphics version.

Trying out Mario Kart Tour (since Angry Birds Go has been terminated).

Sort of ok, still have to get used to play it without a Wiimote.

My latest mobile game is Disgaea RPG which so far is a pretty ‘typical’ example of the genre. I’m not sure the name of the genre, but basically:

  1. Insane amounts of collectible characters
  2. Some of which are premium or via loot box mechanics
  3. You pick a team and they fight other players or ‘mission’ teams.
  4. Lots of mechanics to move A points around to get B points, but if you need C points you have to give them $ and if you buy RIGHT NOW you get D points, too.
  5. Constant stream of special events, challenges, etc.
  6. Lots of grinding.

I’ve played or seen very similar feeling games skinned for Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, Disney Characters, and several more. It’s kind of the RPG cousin to how for a while every IP got a ‘SimCity, but crappy and point based’ game like the Simpson’s game, the Futurama game, etc…

I’m expecting a quick burn.

The Disgaea franchise is a long-running series of tactics RPGs that glorify grinding. Half of the numbered items above are practically core to a series where I think most games have a level limit of 9,999 but you rarely need above 250 or so to ‘win’ the game. There’s tons of characters and they’re each highly customizable. (You can build up a character to master a talent like spellcasting then ‘Reincarnate’ them back to level 1 as a Martial Artist so they can also learn how to punch people really hard.)

The mobile game keeps the charming (and slightly creepy) pixel sprites and ‘dad jokes’ in item descriptions, but the gameplay is less deep (it’s a 5 on 5 “line up and fight” RPG setup similar to early Final Fantasy type games and similar vs. the normal games tactical play) and it’s an even weaker plot than normal Disgaea games.

Disagea revels in either mocking or honoring a subset of anime tropes: Disagea 2’s intro is literally the characters from Disgaea 1 running to a TV to watch the second game happen, and the games are divided into ‘episodes’ which occasionally have “Next episode, this happens…” cut scenes. It’s a very silly world.

I think the franchise, as silly as it is, deserved better than a game that feels very derivative.

Sandy White’s Ant Attack.

Available on the Play store.

So I bought a new laptop and as part of the deal I get a free game from Ubisoft. These are the choices:

Anno 1800 (Standard Edition)
Immortals Fenyx Rising (Standard Edition)
Riders Republic (Standard Edition)
Star Trek: Bridge Crew
Watch Dogs: Legion (Standard Edition)

Any thoughts? I’m leaning towards Anno 1800, as it looks really interesting. Not really interested in Riders or Watch Dogs, from what I’ve seen.

Is Bridge Crew the one that supported VR? I’ve heard it’s neat if you have a group that gets into it, but it sounds like a potentially horrible experience with random pick-up players, if such community even still exists.

Anno 1800 looks fun. I’ve never played any of these.

(I have played Artemis which is kind for he grandfather of the ‘bridge sim’ genre. It’s fun! But you need a group of players who are in the right mood and into it. Artemis has, from what I’ve seen, improved since the developer took a step back from ‘trek-like’ and let it evolve into it’s own thing… Even if it’s still very Trek-like.)

Yes, it is. Hadn’t realised it was a MMORPG though. I’m not really interested in playing online with other people.

It’s not really an MMO, but you kind of need 4-5 people to man all the stations (One captain, one helmsman, one tactical, etc.).

In the mood to play Fallout 3? It’s now available via Steam in a patched version that actually works. Kind of. You get Windows 10 compatibility but you lose playing with mods.

I think I played an earlier GalCiv years ago…

The Paradox games are interesting if you get tired of turn-based strategy. And don’t mind some weirdness all its own.

I’m not playing it, but I notice that quite a few of the videos I see on YouTube about MechWarrior Online are from people who have installed the MechWarrior 2 sound pack modification.

Back to Fire Emblem Three Houses. I’ve been cycling through my games but I’m back stuck to this one.:heart_eyes:

Got a really good deal on Skyrim SE through HumbleBundle and modded the hell out of it through Nexus.

Infra. Finished with Stalburg Water, now onto the next part.

cracks knuckles Been ages since I’ve had some time for games.

Looks more like I’m breaking things than fixing them

The original Red Alert; it’s so cheesy and dated but I love it. Some of the levels are just as hard now as they were …26 years ago(!?! Christ!) and the FMVs are a delight of early 90s rendering.

I’m gonna play 1, 2, and 3 in order to completion, I’ve never chained them like that. Can’t wait to have Tim Curry as the Russian president again
