What's Your New Shiny?

So far everything seems to be running just that smidgeon faster. Also a particular game that was having issues with OpenGL 4 is no longer having issues, so I guess the Metal graphics stuff also included an update to OpenGL.

Oh, it’s much faster here. Network stuff especially. When I receive new email (GMail), I get the notifications in this order:

  • Pop-up from mail.app
  • Chime from mail.app
  • Android phone chirps

Metal replaced OGL almost everywhere Apple was using it, from what I heard.

I also heard this morning that Photos 1.1 supports creating and editing geotag data, which means I can transition from iPhoto.

I’m glad you’re seeing such a nice boost in speed, for me it’s not been all that massive overall, just a few things noticeably faster but not like say, the difference between Panther and Tiger.

Yes they did, on supported Macs. Lucky gits >.> my MBP is from 2011 and is one generation too old to enjoy the new Metal APIs… so I just get updated OpenGL which, while not as shiny, is still very much appreciated. If Apple had maintained its OpenGL packages over the past decade, they wouldn’t be such a laughing stock in the games market.

Yeah, my Mini took a surprisingly long time to actually update (ā€œ31 minutesā€ was something like nearly two hours…) and it’s installed, running, but I’m not seeing a lot of new and shiny stuff, yet. This was an ā€˜under the hood’ version, not a lot of major new features or UI stuff.

I’d like to have the Continuity/Handoff features working, but my phone is too old as is the Mini itself.

Bread machine!

I am hoping to make some cream cheese bread this week. I may have to make some raspberry syrup to go with it.

An Intel NUC (i5 Skylake) and a Logitech K830 media keyboard (because we didn’t have one).

I’ve kitted the NUC with 8GB RAM and a Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD. Windows 10 install took less than 20 minutes from USB insertion to ready to use.

It’ll replace our laggy and frustratingly crash-prone WDTV Live, so I’ve stuck Kodi on it. Man has THAT changed (for the better) since XMBC days.

Give Plex a try if you haven’t seen it. I like it. Though the new Plex Player is crap. The Home Theater rocks though.

That looks quite good. Might have to download that and have a play.

+1 for Plex, it is truly worth it.

Plex convert here too. Like it so much I’m a subscriber.

My nearly 3 year old Droid Razr HD fought the law (of gravity) yesterday, and the law won.

So now I’m havening a grand time setting up my Space Grey iPhone 6s.

You went to the Dark Side? Do they at least have cookies?

Bonus points for the Clash reference though.

There were only 3 phones on my acceptable list. And two aren’t available in stores. I’ve already got a Mac and the integration is pretty sweet.

And if I decide I don’t like it, there’s a good second-hand market I can sell it on down the line.

Just reserved Steam Link. Something I think any PC gamer without a crazy home setup is in dire need of. Oh couch, I’ve missed you so!

My current phone is acting kind of funky in some ways, and I am considering pulverizing replacing it. I don’t think I want to go with another Alcatel phone, but some of the others, it’s a choice between havening a new phone or eating this month.

A Bradley electric smoker, 3 kinds of briquettes, and a chicken, pork butt and some ribs. And the Gluten Free ā€œBread in 5 minutesā€ cookbook. Time to make some deliciousness.

I just made a sourdough starter, so I am hoping to be able to make some sourdough next week.

I’d advise you to let your sourdough starter go for two weeks before you try to use it. That’s how long mine took to get going. I just happen to have some sourdough wrapped hot dogs almost ready to cook for tonight’s dinner…

Okay. But it’s already expanded to twice the original size.

It’s more than how much it expands. Mine went through a period of bubbling madly, and expanded hugely, but smelled like old socks. This is apparently normal, but you want to wait until that stage is passed and it’s settled down some. At least, that’s what I read.

The sourdough wrapped hot dogs were good.
