What's Your New Shiny?

A great big pile of old reclaimed barn wood. Gonna make myself a door and cover the island support I built. Can’t wait!

Edit: I canceled the Pro and ordered a similarly spec’d Air. Couldn’t justify the extra cost for the Pro to myself.

I won a Surface Go 2 in a raffle for the conference I attended earlier this month.

I’m really not sure what the point of the device is thus far. No ports I can plug anything standard into. Feels slow. I can take Office with me but I have that on my iPad and iPhone already. Windows Hello works better with the built-in camera than the fingerprint reader on my Lenovo.

Edit: I was wrong, there is a USB-C port on there so we’ll see what that does.

I guess I can take my geocaching desktop app with me in the car more easily than with a laptop? There’s an app for the phone that connects direct to the website/service but there’s some things I can do easier with the desktop.

Legend of Zelda : Oracle of Ages on gameboy color emulator on my xiaomi device.

My sweetie ordered me a new SDR receiver and magnetic loop antenna for Christmas, which were on substantial discount (30% and 50% off, respectively).

11 posts were split to a new topic: Chairs and chair reviews

My company just sent out an email announcing that we’re on WFH until spring now, given the new round of lockdowns and uncertainty. With all the talk about gaming chairs on here in the past few days I’ve been thinking about getting one, especially since I really need a new chair. What tips/must haves would y’all recommend?

I’ve moved my office upstairs because I almost froze to death in the basement when this started in March. I was literally sitting with a blanket over my head and an old oil heater right next to me. It was private down there, and made a kind of sense at the time because nobody knew how long this was going to go on, so rather than interrupt the entirety of the upstairs, I just set my office up where I could.
Now, I’m wishing I had made one of these.
Hey, you want a racing car chair? Get a chair from a racing car.

Heh. My company has given up trying to project a return to office date. We’re hiring developers from all over the country with no intention of relocating them, so I figure we’re WFH for a good, long time.

I’ve been WFH since March, with no end in sight. I don’t expect to be back in the office for quite a while.

Same here. Originally we were to go back in last September, then next January, now “spring”. A few months ago they sent out a survey to all SSC (store support centre) employees about WFH - “if you had the choice, how many days a week would you want to work from home…” etc., so I think they’re eyeing some sort of more fomalised policy - we have none, currently - for if/when we’re back.

Honestly, before this all started I was firmly in the “I don’t want to work from home; I want to be in the office five days a week” camp. Now… I’d love to work from home three days a week once we’re back. I would like a day or two in the office - I actually miss having face-to-face interactions with a number of my coworkers!

I’ve been working from home since March. I hope and expect to do so until I deploy again in the spring. If I knew that this would be the case until I retire from the mil in a few years, I would sell the house and move to AZ now.

I have to be in the office, even though 95% of the users I’m supporting are WFH. Yay, desktop!

I think our only people ‘heavily’ onsite are the team that builds new laptops and such for users, but even then they’re split over a couple buildings.

We’re theoretically back in the office part-time as of January, but I have a feeling it’s not happening.

Yeah, our Help Desk is the same. They rotate through the office so there’s always one person there to handle the issues that have to be taken care of in person as opposed to remotely. If we need HD to take care of something in person we have to make an appointment to come in.

After the zip on my 20 year old bike boots decided to stop working, I had to head out and find new ones…

We need a CoG.NiceBoots sub-forum. :grinning:

Nice! Those had to be not-cheap. I got some about a month ago from Cycle Gear, their Bilt brand. I’ve taken one ride below 50F, and they kept my feet comfy, but exposed that the ventilation in my gloves is unsuitable for temperatures that low. Soooo, I went back to Cycle Gear and got some new gloves, too!

Pretty excited for the new controller box for our septic system and the new water heater. Being a homeowner is fun!

I guess you could say that my water heater is a new shiny after my old one cracked open a couple of weeks ago.

I’m excited we finally got the rear sliding door replaced. It makes so much more sense now that we got it flipped.

(Used to open via the right side, now via the left… With the space it’s in left makes so much more sense as the right always has a blocker like a bookshelf, plant stand, or (seasonally) a Christmas tree.)
