COVID-19 stuff

This phenomenon can already be noticed over China - less pollutants in the air.

Once they get back to speed, pollution will be back.

Edited to add - @Nabiki posted an Ars article on this a couple of posts above.

I went shopping to pick up a few things and noticed that not only was it busier than normal, the entire row of shelves that holds bottled water was empty. Okay, kind of strange that Walmart would let something that big go empty. I get back home and I find the answer:

The first US death from COVID-19 is in Sunbeam’s, Sig’s and my general area. A state of emergency is in effect now. The hospital where the man died recently updated their procedures that even if someone hasn’t been traveling, they’ll get tested if they have certain health issues.

Lovely. This will make coming back from vacation ever so much fun at work tomorrow. “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming…”

Oh, just remembered. I’ve got a water filter pitcher. I can refill my own bottles. No need to fight crowds for bottled water.

Time to start paying more attention to this. Besides bottled water, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is another panic buy item. If you can’t find it, look in the health and beauty section for just straight isopropyl alcohol that’s at least 70% alcohol. Over 90% is better. It dries out your hands and finds cuts really well, but since it’s a main component of hand sanitizer, it should work by itself. Would rubbing alcohol also work?

Wikipedia’s saying that wearing a face mask is better if you’re already infected since it cuts down on respiratory droplets you exhale in a cough or sneeze. If you’re not sick, it may not do as much good. In an article about the panic buying at Costco, one person said if you’re buying masks and you don’t really need them, that’s less masks that health care workers have available.

Phoey. Another thing I just remembered. Mulan opens here in the US at the end of the month. It’s definitely going to be impacted here as well.

We have a nebulizer at home, so we can self-medicate if required.

I’m not going to go to a hospital if I get it, I’ll be better off remaining at home. Our state hospitals are death traps anyway.

I’m still hoping this is like SARS, and MERS, and Swine, and most of the others.

My county has declared emergency.

Wow, that seems premature. Two cases?

Also, why the hell have quarantine centers if you keep moving people in and out of them?

I sincerely hope it can be contained.

Good luck, and all of the best. Remember to wash your hands!

Frequently. Especially since I have all these birds now. I’ve gotten into the habit of washing my hands after I handle them, which means many times/day.

I’ve finally found a valid use for a Norton product:

It’s not the two cases, it’s the exposure of who knows how many more. This person could have infected a lot of people, so we’re probably going to be seeing a lot of cases soon.

Coronachan have arrived in South Africa.

Only time will tell if she will spread or not. We will have to wait and see.

We’re seeing a lot of ‘preparedness’ within my company right now. A lot of that is, “Oh, we never really thought we’d need to have massive chunks of the company work remotely” and it’s turning ugly as some regions that previously weren’t WFH friendly find they have limited licenses or employees don’t have laptops, so…

Regarding that picture about the Corona beer in the fridge, a poll result being used out of context is having exactly that effect on sales.

In a case of coincidental timing, a comic book company started last year called Upshot Comics came up a new series about a super-virus that breaks out in Southern China, infects tens of thousands and begins to spread around the world. Kills most of those infected. China’s government nukes the entire region but doesn’t stop it. The virus just stops on its own and 5% of the survivors now have new abilities.

The series is called “The Resistance”. The article where I found out about it is on The Wrap website. You can get around that notice about having to sign up to read the article by hitting refresh and move the page a bit more.

The company making it has some pretty good credentials. AWA Studios stands for “Artists, Writers & Artisans”, so they’re putting the focus on those who make the comics, and the writer of “The Resistance” is J. Michael Straczynski, who has a substantial career in writing stories for TV, movies and comics. Alex Alonso and Bill Jemas have worked at Marvel. The comic is due out on March 18th.

And we still don’t know what the disease is really like.

It likes long walks on the beach, full moons, and huge parties full of people.

I did let my SHEQ department know about that, beginning of February when China shitted itself.

So far diddly squat has been done.

Most of us have laptops etc, so the entire company can work remotely with the exception of the DEV team.

batsoup cough

going to be interesting going forward.

Good luck guys.

Some says it is like flu.

Apparently there are two strains out there.

Pray that you get the mild strain, it is like a bout of flu.

The other strain is the deadlier one, it will kill you.
