Home Ownership

Yeah, we have to get at least part of our roof done this year; can’t be put off. Not looking forward to the quote on that…

In lieu of wooden beams, use iron beams?

I (used to) do work for a charity once a month, doing light construction. Combine my surgery and quarantine and I haven’t done any since Jan 2020.

But we did last weekend!

We’re a small team of volunteers, guided by a paid staffer who manages the clients, the projects, and us. The paid guy cut the stringers for the stairs for the back porch and steps we replaced… but he goofed, somehow. We needed 7 steps, his strings had 6.

Each 2" x 12" x10’ board cost $45 - roughly twice the norm. And we needed 4. Expensive goof, boss!

Used my new chainsaw to chop up a downed tree! :muscle: Only six more to go. At least I’ll have plenty of firewood for the winter :fire:

I guess it’s a good thing the ‘deck’ we need built is literally about 2’ x 8’ plus steps.

I am super not looking forward to buying all new trim for the house. I’m only doing 1x4 and 1x6 super plain boards but ugh it’s gonna kill my wallet.

Chicken coop is nearly finished. Need to get the roof up, and once that is done, the chickens can be moved out of their temporary shelter.

Hopefully it will also help them with getting a permament place for laying their eggs, currently they’re laying eggs all over the place, and the place is a bit big…

Tell me about it. We have to get our roof done - we’ve been putting it off, but we can’t anymore. The quote was almost double what we were expecting.

That’s not fun.

Ouchie.

Yeah, especially since we just replaced our 40+ year old furnace and got air-conditioning put in (first time in my life I’ve ever had central AC). At least we don’t have to start paying for that for another year.

We had a few years where IIRC we did the roof, had a year off, then got the siding replaced. Now it’s a few years of “small projects” with any luck… Which has included replacing the washer & dryer and redoing the kitchen.

Our next projects really are small. A hall bathroom getting a new sink and flooring/paint/storage for the big closet.

We have two more “big” projects - neither of which is getting done this year, obviously. We need to replace most of the windows, and I really want to gut and redo the kitchen. The latter we can do on our own, I think, but the former we’ll need to contract out.

I’m hoping to finish the inside of the house this year (maybe not bathrooms but we shall see) and then painting the outside and replacing the roof. Both because the current color won’t match the color I plan to paint the house but also because it’s original to the house, which was built in 1985. :woman_facepalming:t3:

I would like to just finish my deck please. Without taking out a home loan. Lumber prices have gone insane and show no sign of slowing down. Between shortages of truckers and people working manual shipping jobs we have real issues that aren’t going to be solved by more production.

It’s killing me on the plans for building my new house.

Something they don’t teach you about homeowning: When you’re shopping for a gas-powered lawn power, download the service manual for the model you’re considering. If you look at the parts catalog and they only show the engine as a single part, it means it’s designed not to be user-serviceable beyond maybe changing the spark plug and filters.

I really need to do a tuneup on my mower this week. Hundred hour tuneup. Should be fun.

Have fun

It always is nice to DIY and keep things ticking over nicely.

Two hours to do the biggest area of the first floor switching out all the light switches and electrical outlets.

Two and a half hours to do five switches in the kitchen and dining room area. Because I spent almost an hour and a half chasing down stray voltage on a light switch circuit. After spending half an hour figuring out which breakers were the right ones. I’ll be labeling them as I go so it should no longer be an issue.

Guess I get to do more on Saturday. Yay.
