In the market for a laptop

I troll woot until I find what I need.

Right now it looks like most of what they have is business class, but one could work. And they are all coming with 10 on them or upgradeble to it. (How the fuck do you spell upgradeable?) Able to be upgraded. (What am I speaking here, German?)

Anyway, I’ve bought my last two from there and been pretty damn happy, they usually have some sort of gaming laptop on there about every other week or so. Alienware machines even show up in the 800ish range, but most of those aren’t under 6 pounds.

@Johtoguy, It’s a 3 day old post but here’s a Dell with an i5 and 960M for $700 with a code:

Thanks, i was unable to get the page to load properly and so i never got to see the deal but thank you for keeping an eye out for me.

Another deal @Johtoguy: http://www.extremetech.com/deals/215944-et-deals-dell-inspiron-15-7000-series-quad-core-gaming-laptop

This one looks pretty good for a second machine, or disposatop. 299 for a 17.3" laptop, even an older model, is pretty nice.

If I had the spare scratch it would be a homework computer.

LOL, I’m still using the laptop I ended up buying when I started this. Thinking about replacing it for next year’s deployment. The Army once again owes me several thousands of dollars, so who knows?

I’m in need of a newer laptop, too. I would prefer to spend closer to $500, if I can find an amazing deal in the ramp up to black Friday. I would really like to have a backlit keyboard with 10-key, and if possible, a touchscreen… might be a bit of a pipe dream for my target price, though. Oh, and a FULL HD display 19whatever x 1080 minimum. None of those quasi-HD 960x720 monstrosities that quickly become painful to look at. I had to use one at a client site a while back, and it was awful - look at the screen and feel like you need new glasses, look anywhere else and regain the ability to focus.

My only real pain point with my current laptop (aside from just wear and tear, like it might finally die on me) is that the processor is insufficient for some things I wish to do. The question is how badly I expect to want to do those things over the next year or so. I suspect I would enjoy a more modern laptop, but I’d end up playing more games than making more music if I had one, so I’m probably better off with what I have.

It’s also tempting to just buy a monitor and bring along the SFF desktop that I bought back in March. The processor is far from mighty and the integrated graphics blow, but it has a decent SSD and 16GB of RAM and is more than adequate for most things I need. That machine is just sitting at the moment; it was to be the secondary office/music machine on the desk for our bedroom that we haven’t yet acquired.

Just ordered this:

Specs say it has room for a 2.5" drive, and a free RAM slot inside

I don’t love Lenovo, but except for a touch screen, it has everything I was looking for. And I can totally live without a touchscreen. For under $450, including tax, that’ll do. (early black Friday deal)

Wow, that is really tempting, actually. I don’t actually want a touchscreen. I may have to consider this seriously.

Right?! Normally, I would hold of and think about it for at least a day or two, but I was worried about it selling out, so I pulled the trigger. It is supposed to ship “by” the 9th, so I’ll have to wait almost 2 weeks to get it, but I’m happy with the ratio of price to anticipated performance. Looks like the i5-9300 processor was released earlier this year, and I think another one has come out since, but I’m sure the newer one would cost $200+ more. And any nvidia chip is going to be better than intel graphics, so that’s a nice bonus.

Oh shit this fits my needs to the dot!

Looks like it went back up to regular price - $650. I’m glad I placed the order when I saw it!

Still not a bad price for the PC. How does the case feel? How is typing on it?

I’m still waiting to receive it. When they say “Will ship by Mon, Nov 9”, I think they mean that they won’t ship it until November 9. I was kind of hoping it would go out earlier. A lot of other vendors tend to beat the estimates by a pretty decent margin. The tool I ordered from the Home Depot on October 21st arrived at the store on the 26th, but the estimate was to be ready for pickup by Nov 5th or maybe 15th.

Ooh ooh ooh! I bought those when I found them! They are a must-have for folks who don’t have fingers strengthened by pushing 12 ga wire into tiny boxes all day… I absolutely LOVE them.

Nice! Good to know. They’re one of those tools that you can’t find to buy when you need them, so it is better to buy it when you don’t, so you’ll have it on hand when you need it.

I found out recently that the issue Dell laptops have where the trackpad randomly stops responding for about 15 seconds or so is due to the battery temporarily swelling. Cute.

stop stroking it like that and it won’t be a problem.
