Okay, I know there are a lot of photographers in here so I thought I’d post this.
I took a photo that I absolutely love. My son took one look at it and said “Oh wow, that’s an awesome photo”.
My wife and daughter were more in the “yeah, it’s okay I guess”.
I’ve shown it to some other people as well, and everybody seems to fall into either one of those categories - nothing in between. So I thought I’d put it up here and see if the same holds true.
I think it’d make a great computer/tablet wallpaper. I see what you’re going for but it’s not quite landing for me (other than for wallpaper usage).
I’m having trouble figuring out what the focus of the photo is, and what region is meant to be in focus. This may be a situation where a shallow DoF and lots of blur in the foreground is working against you. My eye keeps getting drawn to the right, but that’s all bokeh. Maybe if the right side was more in focus and blur increased to the left/back it would work better for me?
I was deliberately focussing on the left hand side - the light was more interesting there and the red and green bits of grass sticking up appealed to me.
I can see what you mean about the foreground distracting, but I didn’t want the whole thing to be in focus, and I wanted to focus on the left hand side. The shape and coverage of the black stuff and the angle of the light meant that the foreground had to be out of focus for what I was looking for.
Thanks for your comments. I think next time I’m doing something like this I’ll take a few more shots with different focal points to see how they turn out. No point having a digital SLR if you aren’t going to take lots of photos
I get too caught up in trying to determine what is the metal grate, so I don’t appreciate whatever your going for. Nerd version of forest for the trees, I guess.
I too found myself spending a lot of time wondering what the picture is of. I tend to prefer realist paintings over abstract or impressionist, so I’m probably not the best art critic.
I especially like it large, and could see putting it up on a wall. But in a big room, I think it does better at a distance where you don’t focus on trying to figure out what it is.
Thanks for all your comments folks - it’s really interesting how different tastes can be. It was supposed to be fairly abstract, so if abstract isn’t your thing then I guess this will be an immediate fail. I do have things to think about next time though
For the record, it was actually some black plastic weed mat / erosion mat or something like that. I just really liked the shapes and colours and the way the light was reflecting off it.
