Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

I seriously need to change my password on and then sign out of several websites so that I don’t get sucked into time-wasting arguments.

I have a passport again!

Now you’re ready to flee the country should Rump get re-elected.

The renewal process is a bit scary as you have to mail your info and current passport to Philadelphia.

Easy process for me as my info was mostly identical. $Wife needs to do hers and will have to send extra info for a name change.

I was so worried work would say, “overseas trip: anyone with a passport want to go?” While it was being processed.

I miss having the components of my kitchen on one floor of the house.

Breezing through my morning comics and I come across the one for 9 Chickweed Lane. It took me a minute to realize it was a very understated evolution of the relationship of childhood sweethearts.

Yesterday was another realization of some things:

  1. I REALLY don’t handle heat well.
  2. Years of spending most of my waking hours sitting at a computer have not been kind to my physical endurance when performing manual labor.
  3. Now that I’m in my 30s and in the “I always have something that hurts” phase of existence, I can’t imagine that’s helping my constitution in any way beyond just making me more tired.

I was helping family move some furniture yesterday. It was unfortunately near 90 degrees, and we were taking things out of a very tiny 2nd floor living space (we called it an apartment, but it’s really just the 2nd floor of a house that’s physically separated from the 1st floor). Said furniture consisted of some particularly heavy dressers. After getting one down the external stairs and walked over to the truck, my hearing went tinny and faded for about a minute and a half, and I had to go back inside and start splashing myself with water because I was overheating too much.

Yeah, been there/done that, but in my case one embarrassing incident was the local Renn Fest in full kilt. For me, I don’t remember audio issues, but do remember tunnel vision and passing out. It’s not a pleasant experience at all. Hydrate, and that means water and not soda/beer.

My wife worries because I’m generally a pretty quiet person anyway so it’s not always clear if I’m just enjoying myself quietly or about to pass out. (@Force10 saw me in a rare talkative mood recently, and she would have been justified to ask me to STFU as I know I was rambling, for which I later apologized.)

This is probably part of the problem, since 90% of my general daily fluid intake is in the form of Wild Cherry Pepsi. The other part is the aforementioned computer-sitting. Once I got home, I drank some Gatorade, slept for a couple hours, woke up and drank some more Gatorade while talking with a friend who had come over to do laundry while the headache went away, then went to bed early. I’m still tired. I’m yawning at my desk at work as I type this.

It doesn’t help that I can’t stand drinking water. No matter where it comes from (tap, bottled, filtered, whatever) it always tastes like crap.

Give Nuun electrolyte tablets a try.

I’m trying to ween myself off the caffeinated teat (and that doesn’t sound good no matter how I say it…) and one simple thing I use is the water-flavoring squeeze bottles. I think they play games with labeling to say ‘zero sugar’ but they give me an option since I’m trying to drink more water in the afternoon at work.

Also, ice-cold water is for some reason so much better tasting than room temperature water. Which is why I also indulge in getting amusing water bottles occasionally. So basically I’m good with my soppy-cup as long as it’s got Star Wars or something on it.

I’m in the non-water-fan camp, too. But I’ve been forcing my self to drink more. I prefer it chilled, too. And I sometimes add the single serving Kool-Aid zero sugar packets; it helps.

I also have the desk job / need exercise situation going against me. The fitbit helps a little. Being busy busy busy at work for the last few weeks has helped more.

Hm. Kinda wish I could taste what they end up like before buying a bunch. I tried a Propel water out of the vending machine at work today, figuring that my levels might still be a little off given that I still feel tired as hell and strained. Tasted like I was licking a vaguely berry-scented magazine advert.

I’m kind of the opposite here. We’ve been dealing with a laptop replacement project for the last few months and at this point, I’m so mentally drained anymore that by the time I leave work, all I want to do is sit and turn my brain off once I get home. I don’t like leaving the house as it is, so going to walk is out (not to mention I live on a big fucking hill, so I’d rather not hike all the way up that thing once I get down it), and the antisocial anxiety issues mean going to a gym is right out. I really probably should knuckle down and figure out a way to lose weight and get healthier than I am, but…I really just can’t muster up the energy to care anymore.

My choice is a lemonade flavor one… Not sure the brand. I try others, but they’re iffy, but then again I’m kind of picky.

The lemonade one does have the issue that I can either put too little in (and then it tastes like funky water) or too little (in which case the acidity scorches my throat). with a very fine line between the two.

Hm. If you can figure out the brand and let me know, I’d appreciate it. I like lemonade, but I probably like it at the “overpowering” level. I’ve always had a tongue that hated blandness and loves things like hotwings, raw lemon, etc. I tend to make super-strong Kool-Aid and whatnot as well.

Probably tomorrow when I’m at work. Took today off to get the contractors started.

I have an empty square carafe than I fill with various types of Crystal Light. The best ones for me are the raspberry Lemonade and the Strawberry Orange Banana. Fill it up and chuck it in the freezer overnight. Drink as it melts during the day. Calorie count is about 40 for a half gallon.
