Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

So on one hand, I get the allowance thing, on the other, that’s a loaded ass term. Maybe budget.

Yeah, I might have explained that badly.

I cannot give my wife an allowance because it’s our money. We decide where money will be spent, together. It’s only in the last few years (5 or 10) that we’ve had enough money to have our own separate budgets for discretionary spending (we call it “Mad Money”).

A friend’s father always had that attitude “I earned it so it’s my money - you get an allowance for household stuff.” That’s what I find repugnant.

Yeah, it was super common that way before. In a lot of houses while it was his income she managed it all and he just spent what he wanted to. Different times.

Even when we were poor we had our blow money. $50 bucks a month was a fortune to just spend on whatever.

All right, birds. That’s it. You’re getting recycled bird seed until it’s eaten. I’ve got a shop vac to retrieve what you dumped into the grass and I’m not afraid to use it. Don’t you know that other birds are starving in Japan?

Studio Foglio’s GoFundMe campaign is still going and they’re at $93K raised so far. I kept checking it every so often and the goal would go up as each milepost was passed. The goal currently is $100K. It started at $10K. They’ve probably got it set so the goal automatically goes up as needed.

It’s good that 1400+ people have been willing to donate and they will be able to pay more of their bills. I’ve never participated in one before, so I don’t know if having these without a definitive end date is common.

I set one up for my sister-in-law after my brother passed away. We did the same thing; raised the goal as we got close to the old one, as all the advice we saw said that people were less inclined to donate if they saw a campaign had reached its goal. I’m not sure there’s an auto-increase option - I don’t remember seeing one. I also don’t remember being able to add an end date. I could add, because it was for a death, when the memorial was going to be but as far as I know it just stays up potentially forever. I think it can be manually closed, though.

Hmmm… maybe I need to adjust my campaign…

I thought I saw on the website that GoFundMe added the function to have it auto-adjust the goal. If that’s correct, then I guess it’s up to the person who creates theirs to determine when to stop taking donations.

Oh, really, Yahoo? I must enable DRM on my Linux computer in order to play audio or video from your site? Guess what website I won’t be visiting any more.

It’s that time of year again. Time to pumpkin spice all the things! Including your car’s muffler. And toilet paper. And deodorant.

I’ll admit, I never understood the pumpkin spice craze. I mean, it’s okay, but not like egg nog or candy cane ice cream… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I used to make a killing selling pumpkin spice flavoured sugar syrup around this time of the year, but it isn’t my favourite thing.

Same, but add vanilla to that as well.

You know, the Carpenters were once derided for being “too vanilla”. To that, Paul Williams once said, “Yes, but what an exquisite flavor vanilla is.”

I spent about a half hour trying to find it, but I can’t. If you remember, I posted the information about problems at Linus Tech Tips which were highlighted by Gamers Nexus. LTT put everything on hold while they went soul searching, acknowledged they had a too-intense production schedule and scaled back, and fixed a lot of other things. They seem to have come out of it better than they were, which is what should happen in these situations.

Here’s some follow-up, courtesy of Alex and Andy, two employees that were fired by LTT and are thankful it happened. Another, Jake, says he quit and looks like he’s doing well doing his own thing.

Both are being made possible by how amicable both partings were. In the comments of the first video, one person said “I feel like in a few years, Linus’ legacy will be a bunch of great niche channels founded by people who used to work for him”.

Also in that first video is Alex talking about when Gamers Nexus posted theirs, it missed the mark in several places (or maybe all of them) and it caused a lot of damage to LTT with lost sponsors and more.

I’m watching The Empire Strikes Back for the first time in a few years. After Obi-Wan says “that boy was our last hope” Yoda corrects him with “no, there is another.”

Kenobi, did you lose your memory when Vader bumped you off? You knew about Leia all along, you were there when she and Luke were born and you took her to Alderaan yourself!

Any opportunity to attack the sky, our mortal enemy.

And the answer is: the seam at the bottom is starting to give out. I’ve seen an orange liquid seeping out of it. I’ll have to take it outside to empty it.
