RIP Thread

Thanks, @Nabiki and @Datababe It was a tough week. A few days after my friend died my old boss (and my dad’s current boss) died from multi-system organ failure following a surgery. And then a couple days after that one of my favorite little old ladies from church and a good friend of my grandmother died. At least she died of being 96 and not anything bad. Sad part is I know her husband will soon follow - he misses her terribly and he is 101, so it won’t be a surprise, just sad…

“O Rei” - Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, possible one of the world’s greatest soccer players.

Russel Johnson, the professor from Gilligan’s Island.

And another actor from the same era, Dave Madden, from the Partridge Family.

A fascinating aspect of Russel Johnson’s life: His “home in Washington” was on Bainbridge Island. I have always loved that about him – his career was made on an “island”, and retired on an island.

One of the Euphemisms for death we use around here is “was sent to the island…”

We use, “Sent to a nice farm family.”

He was also actually marooned at one point in his military career.

Pete Seeger

Yesterday, it was Maximilian Schell, due to a long illness.

Today, it was Philip Seymour Hoffman from a drug overdose. Variety reports he was nearly done filming his role in the second part of the final Hunger Games movie.

That one’s hitting people hard around here, as he grew up & went to high school in the area and his mother still lives here. Someone flattened out his first name in the snow on the hill behind the school last night & filled it with candles (pic is on Facebook, so I can’t link to it here at work).

Arthur Rankin, Jr. died on Saturday. I knew that Rankin/Bass Products made Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and quite a few other Christmas classics, but I didn’t know they also made The Last Unicorn and Thundercats.

Shirley Temple

The ultimate child star.

Sid Caesar, dead at 91.

This was actually two months ago, but Harold Camping died in December. He was the guy that had predicted the world would end in October 2011 with the Rapture taking place 5 months before that, then it became October would be the Rapture.

He’d had a stroke in between those two dates, but his death was a result of complications from a fall two weeks before.

Kind of a sad end to his life. I wonder if “bearing false witness” would apply to his predictions since so many people believed him, but then he didn’t want to be responsible for those who made donations or gave away money/property based on what he had said. Maybe it’s just a simple case of pride: “I’ll make this prediction to get attention”.

Harold Ramis - He was my favourite in Ghost Busters.

Just read this, I thought he was an awesome director and writer too.

I’ll dig out my Ghostbusters in honor of Egon!

They’re still working on Ghostbusters 3. Harold was only going to have a cameo, so they’ll be able to work around him not being able to participate.

Haven’t they been working on it since 2000?
