RIP Thread

My condolences for your loss.

I’d like to be more eloquent, but I’ll stick with a simpler ditto.

I might go with IBID.

“I look at the stars. It’s a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That’s where I’ll be going soon. 'We’re all star stuff”, I suddenly remember Delenn’s line from Joe’s script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That’s all."

— Mira Furlan, 9/7/1955 - 1/20/2021. Ambassador Delenn on Babylon 5 and Danielle Rousseau on Lost. More on Mira’s Twitter page.

“Joe”, of course, is Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski. If I remember right, he hired her and her husband Goran Gajić partly to help them after they had been blacklisted, and the House of Mir, a very prominent family in the series, was named after her. He posted a two-page tribute to her on his Twitter account.

I never saw Lost, but I think this is my favorite scene featuring her from Babylon 5:

Delenn’s fleet arrives after Earth Alliance attacks B5. She announces herself. “This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw or be destroyed!”

Earth Force Officer: “Negative! We have authority here. Do not force us to engage your ship.”

Delenn: “Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari Fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else.”

And now Hank Aaron, at 86. No cause of death yet.

IIRC, his family said “peacefully in his sleep” and asked for privacy.

I am thinking about a Babylon 5 marathon this weekend. I have the whole series on DVD.

Now who is gonna bring us interviews?

And now we say goodbye to Gregory Sierra. Cancer got him at 83 on January 4 but was reported today. Neighbor Juliou Fuentes on Sanford and Son, Miguel “Chano” Amanguale on Barney Miller and appeared in many other TV shows and movies. The article says he retired in 2018 because he was having trouble remembering his lines. Has been getting fan mail regularly, even after his death.

@RRabbit42 's hard drive.

After 7 years it croaked.

Condolences.

Thanks, maybe not needed. I’ll continue over in the Linux questions thread.

Former NFL Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer, 77. Alzheimer’s.

Most successful coach to never make it to the Super Bowl. He was fired by San Diego after posting a 14-2 season for BS reasons (or maybe they weren’t BS reasons, I’m sure @Force10 is better-informed about it than I).

They were totally BS reasons. It came down to a pissing contest between Marty and general manager AJ Smith. Spanos took AJ’s side.

Rush Limbaugh, at 70, of complications from lung cancer.

From December 2019:

And today we do say goodbye to them. They suddenly closed their doors and website this morning.

I had stopped by a few times last year and once this year. The store never returned to full capacity with merchandise, but the items slowly seemed to be migrating towards the front. I was surprised on the last trip when the home video section was empty, but then I saw they had moved almost all of the remaining stock to a new shelving row.

So it was kind of a combination of they did switch to consignment sales and like a self-liquidation. I figured it might be the last trip for me because there was only two specific things I wanted and a couple others were impulse buys. I didn’t know it actually would be the last trip.
