I am absolutely gutted by this one, especially since he was only 56 years old. Andrew was a wonderful novelist, and oh so generous to other writers with his time, knowledge and, experience. I attended several workshops and talks he gave, and two experiences stand out for me.
I attended a workshop that was hosted by one of the writing communities I’m a member of and (on the fly) gave a synopsis of my WIP as part of an exercise during it. I jokingly mentioned that I didn’t have a title for it and he said it should be called “No Turning Back”. Which is perfect. About a year later I went to a talk he gave at my local library and told him he probably didn’t remember but he gave me the title for my WIP. As soon as I told him the title, he remembered me and the plot of my WIP and asked how it was going. When I mentioned I was discouraged because I’d hit a snag, he took the time to give me some advice and gentle words of encouragement.
Yeah, apparently there are some concerning signs there. She was dead and possibly decomposing, the dog is dead near her, there is a spilled bottle of pills and he is dead in another room.
A few days ago, it was Richard Chamberlain from complications of a stroke, at age 90.
Yesterday, it was Val Kilmer from pneumonia, at age 65. Based on what’s on his Wikipedia page, he got throat cancer around 2014 and was cancer-free by 2016, but had health problems afterward, including have to use a feeding tube and an electric voice box to speak.
Kilmer had worked with a company in 2021 so digital creations of his voice made with AI could be used in future film projects. But for his last film role in Top Gun: Maverick, he spoke all of his lines and they were digitally cleaned up.
If you had watched the Willow TV series, they had archival footage of Kilmer in there. If you didn’t, then you never will because it was deleted from Disney+ to save money. That is, unless personal recordings of the series somehow appear online.
