Well, variables with longer names take up more memory, and more memory used means it’ll be slow, and we can’t have the blazing performance of our VBScript shackled by that.
By the by, what happened to that court case @MSUAlexis?
Yes, I disconnected my work phone. No, I will not connect it again. Because I need to finish handover documentation and I absolutely loath and detest it when I’m in top gear doing documentation and I get interrupted for some $crap that I have to attend to… It interrupts the flow of my thought processes and then I’m all NAAFI.
That’s two bugs in your product that I’ve fixed (and provided the fix to you) in as many business days.
Obviously, you don’t test properly, else both would have come to light long ago. Well, one has been an open, known bug for 2 years now. Why has it taken so long to fix when it’s related to core functionality and a feature you sell people on?
We’re paying 6 figures per year in licensing for this heap. PLUS paying through the nose for professional services to do this upgrade that’s behind schedule and over budget. At what point do you start dealing us a refund or discount for feeding you the fixes you can’t be bothered to implement - especially when it’s code that was never written properly in the first place?
Dude, you shouldn’t work for a company named Test Environment.
We ended up winning but only $80 instead of the $700 or so he had asked for. However. Since they had to retain a lawyer, and said lawyer was from Cleveland, and billed for the minute he left his home until getting back, I feel confident that we actually won a lot more. Even at a conservative $250/hr, it would br 5hr of driving, 2hrs in court, plus dicking around time. Plus time.spent with filings and the like. I’m guessing they spent almost $1500 in court costs. And since we won, they can’t sue to recover.
Should have just given him the original request and saved the time, hassle, and client goodwill. He has told anyone who will listen not to go there because of their poor people skills, even though their medical ability is top notch…
I actually cackled in glee
Good for you!
Background : We have 4 sites connected via a VPNS network to our Head Office. Time-critical transactions is transmitted via this network.
Sometime last year manglement signed a contract saying that we will deliver said transactions on time ~ I’m not sure of the exact wording of said contract ~ and we’ll be liable for penalties on any late or outstanding transactions.
Yesterday at 1940CAT the entire VPNS network went down hard - and our telco’s busy attending to this issue. Manglement is shitting themselves because of late transmissions and possible penalties.
Tough shit, had they included IT from the get-go, we would’ve pointed out to them that a 100% guaranteed uptime is totally and utterly impossible to achieve, and that there should be a “safety” or “relief” clause included to let us off the hook when something like this happens. Either force majeure, acts of nature or the such which we can’t plan for, should not be held against us as such acts are totally out and beyond our control.
Having a backup line is a good idea, but there is only one telco in that specific area. Recently the 3G infrastructure has been updated, so we can look at that for a backup link as it involve different telco’s, but to do so we need to upgrade infrastructure and equipment…
What kind of company doesn’t make an emergency plan or something like that in case critical core staff resign, land under a bus or something like that?
A circus? Or am I missing something here ?
Finding a replacement sysadmin brings out all sorts of ugly company politics, things seems to be turning really messy…
Hardly any of them do.
When I was out with Cancer they all just struggled along and tried to figure it out.
I am so screwed right now I don’t know if it’s asshole or breakfast time.
I’ve been putting out fires, and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do now that they are mostly out. Except I know there are more fires now, because I haven’t been doing my regular crap.
Get in somebody to help you? Once all the fires have been terminated, take stock of the situation, and take it from there.
A single 3kVa UPS for a whole cabinet? Who’s been havening good puff-puff-pass stuff?
I don’t usually read the comments to articles over on ‘The Register’, but I saw one last week that sounded very similar to what you are describing with your fire extinguisher situation.
Was that you, by any chance?
Linky to said comment?
Everything is on fire, and the sales staff are running around with buckets of gasoline pouring it everywhere while screaming that it’s my fault.
Thankfully, I have a boss that isn’t buying it, but she’s catching on fire too.
Most probably yes.
Hour long meetings doesn’t resolve issues. Actions do.
OK, all caught up and the fires are out.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAH!!!
What i really said… –whimper-- please make it stop.
You guys still don’t get it.
And you still trust me with the keys to the kingdom.
I prefer NOT to do work on remote sites as you may turn around and accuse me of sabotaging something even though I did not.
Wake up, move responsibilities over to other people. 17 days left before I’m out of here.
