What Made You Happy Today?

We adopted Rudy yesterday and so far he seems to be one of the most laid back husky puppies I’ve ever met.

Mentos has a commercial running that appears to be inspired by one of John Cleese’s characters from Monty Python.

I’m still getting used to the odd sizes of the yardage of the new house but I don’t mind mowing. I can plug in my headset and zone out. The mower is powered when I want it to so the hills aren’t bad. But I have some bald spots that need worked on this summer. Always something to do.

My self propel belt broke, so now I have a really heavy awkwardly weighted non-self propelled mower.

I’m looking at the lithium ion powered ones. So I can have a coal powered mower. Doubt if I’ll pick one up, but I’m looking. I love my LI weed eater.

As it is I need to try out my new bench grinder, with my new clamps, and sharpen my mower blade. I love yard sales.

Heh. Even if you don’t figure in the regular mowing, you will never be done with the lawn.

Last summer was loads of fun, 4 solid weeks of rearranging sprinklers in the mud for 3 hours every night while we tried to get the grass to take hold.

On the way home last night I won tickets from a radio station to a show I’d been thinking of buying a ticket to, and then won $22 on my lottery ticket when I checked it! Woohoo!

I stumbled across a TV channel last night called the El Rey Network. It was created by Robert Rodriguez a few months ago. It’s primarily for latino audiences, but as the website puts it, “El Rey is… Kung Fu flicks, Cult Horror, Grindhouse, Bullets & Brawlers, Badass TV, Staff Picks”.

The network has From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, which expands on the movie and Rodriguez directed some of the episodes. But what I really liked was Director’s Chair, which is Rodriguez interviewing other directors. The interview with John Carpenter was pretty interesting, especially hearing his answers to questions sent in by other directors for him.

I’m happy to report that Rudy is turning out to be an outstanding puppy. He has a clean bill of health from the vet, has a good temperament and is very good with other dogs and people. About the only issue I have is that he treats Charlie the kitten as his personal plaything. Huskies are known cat killers so I will never be able to trust them alone together and I’m working with him on toning down his attitude towards the cat. Fortunately he takes to training fairly well, which is another plus since training can be difficult for his breed in general.

Here’s a picture of him all full of dirt from this weekends trip to the dog park:

I hate mowing. But a lot less with my mower. Unfortunately, once I’ve been gone for 10+ days, it’s just pushing things down and I need to use a powered mower instead, or the weed whacker in extremis.

Last. Day. Of. School!!!

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks

One more week.

I went out to check the damage to my persimmon tree when the neighbour dropped a palm frond on it. The tree is damaged, but it has fruit! This is the first year it’s produced fruit.

The story behind this tree: Twelve years ago, I visited family in Japan. My uncle in Hisaka has persimmon trees, and a lot of dried persimmons, which I love. I brought several dried persimmons from his trees home with me, and I planted three of the seed from those. This tree is one of the two that are now growing in my yard.

My work Inbox is empty.

Edit: It lasted all of five minutes, but it was nice while it lasted.

If you haven’t already, try a Caramel Apple Empanada from Taco Bell…you may never look back.

377 miles (as of last night) on the Prius V & dakwife hasn’t had to put gas into it yet. Currently showing 48.5 MPG on the dashboard.

I’m impressed.

Getting up at my usual time, doing my usual morning routine, then deviating from my usual routine by making a pot of tea and breakfast. I love having time to get stuff done around the house. My house is cleaner than it’s been in months. I also had time to walk to the store for a couple of things.

I think I’m going to go make another pot of tea.

Hee. I kinda suck at mowing lawns, because that was NEVER my chore. It was my brothers’ job, so I was never taught. Now that we have a powered mower and a stretch of nice weather, I don’t really have much of an excuse this month.

What made me happy TODAY? Two glasses of wine and the boys going to bed early. Also, getting more writing done than I have in a long time. That always feels good.

@Sunbeam it won’t let me use the red reply button either…

Today should be dry enough and normal enough weather outside to actually get my yard and garden under control. It has been so rainy on my days off that I couldn’t go out, and now it’s been over a week since I weeded or deadheaded or weedwhacked or anything. It’s bad. Same thing with the herbs, strawberries, broccoli… Looks like I’ll spend all day weeding and harvesting, and all night preserving. Luckily I just freeze the herbs and strawberries, but with the amount that’s out there, it’ll take a while. Even the birds have given up trying to get all the strawberries there are so many!
