I crossed a day off on the schedule a month from now because I don’t think I’m going to feel like working that day. And I don’t feel guilty. Considering hiring relief so we can still make money that day, but if it doesn’t work out, then I’m still not going in.
Kaijyu started eating today.
He’s been very sick for almost a week now. I took him to the vet on Friday, where he got fluids and blood drawn. The next day, I picked up antibiotics and a bag of fluid for him and I’ve been giving him 200 ml of subcutaneous fluids every day. I’ve been tricking him into eating about a teaspoon of baby food at a time by smearing it on his paw so he licks it off. If he hadn’t started eating on his own today, he was going to have to be hospitalized.
He’s still not eating much, but he’s eating a bit of canned cat food on his own. He also went outside for a bit and ate some grass.
My to-do list is to-done!
Windows Offline Update. I have an old W7 VM that I use when I need to do anything work related and I don’t have my regular laptop. It hasn’t checked for updates in about 2 years. WOU made very quick work of the backlog of patches that needed to be applied.
tldr: My wife gave me her new Moto G5 Plus because she knew it was a phone I really wanted.
Long version:
A couple of weeks ago my phone died.
I’m not one to go and spend thousands of dollars on a phone, so my budget was around NZ$400 (about $US250). The phone I wanted to get was the Moto G5 Plus, which had just been released.
Except that it had been released everywhere else in the world, but not New Zealand.
I contacted Motorola NZ to ask when it was likely to be released here, and the response was “keep checking the web site”… Yeah, nah!*
So I ended up buying the Samsung J7 Prime - which is a pretty good phone, about the same price as the G5+, but nowhere near as good as the G5+.
My wife decided that her phone would last her a bit longer so we didn’t replace hers as well (despite me telling her that it was pretty much stuffed). I’m really glad she didn’t listen to me.
It turns out that “a bit longer” was actually 2 weeks. Her battery was getting worse and worse and ended up lasting about 6 hours between charges so she decided she couldn’t live with it any longer and wanted to get a new phone.
It turns out that the G5+ is actually now available in NZ and we bought that for her. But because it was the phone that I really wanted (and she didn’t really care), she decided to take my new J7 Prime and give me the G5+ instead.
So I now have my brand new Moto G5 Plus, which I love
* For those uninitiated, “yeah, nah!” is a kiwi expression which means "You have got to be joking, there’s no way I’m on earth I’m ever going to be doing that"
We can say a lot with very little.
I tell you what.
Wife’s pregnancy is coming on nicely.
Yes, it was another oopsie. We have opted for sterilization at the same time after the C-section is done.
Not too long now, 4 weeks left.
Got a sunburn on my arms that includes some stripes. I wouldn’t normally be happy about that except it came about as a result of taking a different route on my bike ride yesterday and I was out a lot longer than I planned on. I found a park that didn’t know even existed that includes some mountain bike trails. I think I better skip the ones named Ground Control and Major Tom, however.
I will shortly have to stop buying things from Amazon.
Because I won’t be sure they’ll show up here before I go home.
We say that in California too.
Interesting, I always thought it was a particularly peculiarly kiwi expression. I think it more likely that we copied it from you rather than the other way around - though it is always possible that it developed simultaneously.
What made me happy today - I love my new phone ![]()
It has a lot of little features that just make life easier. These features have probably been available on expensive phones for ages, but I’ve never had them before:
- Shake the phone twice and the torch turns on (this may seem useless, but I was in the dark with one hand full last night and it was great)
- Put the phone face down and it automatically goes into do-not-disturb mode (great for meetings)
- Pick the phone up off the desk and it briefly shows the notifications screen (no need to press the power button)
- Pick the phone up when it rings and it goes into silent/vibrate mode
Like I said, these are just little things, but they all add up to a much better experience and they suggest that people have been thinking really hard about how phones could be better.
Heading to my parents’ house after work today. Five days of sitting by the pool, fishing, and hanging out with my bff and her family. My kids are so excited, and so am I!!
Yup, the convenience features built into the Moto phones are really useful. Like the double shake for light, the double twist for camera mode is really easy to get used to.
I’ve heard “Yeah, nah!” with the Kiwi inflection, but it’s not something I’d say. I’m not from California, but I’ve more often heard “Yeah, no.” with more of a valley girl sass to it.
I know that in most of the English speaking world a torch is what we call a flashlight but this made me imagine fire erupting from your phone.
Just what you need for a cospplay costume.
I had an image of a cutting torch, which would be awesome.
So…a Samsung Galaxy Note 7?
I have managed to go two days without having to beat something to death. I feel like a factory worker looking at the days since injury counter being reset to 1 after it was in the thousands.
It is Friday.
I have survived the week without killing anyone. But it was a very close run.
