That’s awesome. And it’s amazing how often just being willing to do the things that need to be done works out. I’m starting to think that the next job I have if that effort isn’t recognized it’s time to move on, even if it’s only recognized by being given more stuff. The new model company is miserable at recognizing effort rather than rote obedience.
Nice place to be, I’m glad you had that opportunity.
A (sort of) continuation to my previous post - last night I had supper with four of my former colleagues from $ConsultingFirm and it was wonderful. Haven’t seen some of them in almost 15 years, so it was great to catch up. We talked for hours, and we’re going to try and be better at keeping in touch.
Sentai Filmworks had a big sale on their anime products for Black Friday. I kept putting off ordering and missed it. They’re running another holiday sale with the same prices, some as little as $4 for the DVD version, so the only thing I might miss out on is if a particular item is out of stock now.
Just bought a Dyson v6 Absolute with three additional attachments and free 2 day shipping for $203 including taxes. In case anyone else is looking. Also glad to get rid of my big bulky vacuum. Now maybe I can get the kids to do it! That would be the happiest of all!
Saturday took the kids to the Big Explore and had a blast. I really hope they do it again next year. Yesterday took the boys ice skating and they loved it! Even with all the falling, and the fact that they are going to be bruised from head to toe. Might buy the quarterly membership since I love skating so much as well. And most of all, there is not a single thing on my to do list for today. Tomorrow and the rest of the week yes, but not today. Yay!!
We bought a Sharp Aquos 1080p television (maybe 40"?) for $60 at Goodwill yesterday and the garage entertainment couch is now substantially upgraded. We spent a good portion of the evening playing Halo 2 on the original XBox. I have a whole box of games I’d like to replay (or at least nostalgically wander through), but first perhaps we need to buy a new electric blanket because the garage is a bit chilly this time of year.
Anyway, we had fun playing Halo and I only had to put the handicap on a little bit to make it mildly fair. The rule has always been in our house that you let the kids win occasionally in anything but Halo, but I’ve gotten a bit softer in my old age.
I’m back at work! I’m not so much thrilled to be in the office, but very happy to be not sick, or at least, feeling tons better than last week… I picked up a cold or whatever right after Thanksgiving, but because of my allergies, the cough and congestion didn’t ever 100% go away. Fast forward a few weeks, and I played Fallout 76 with @Force10 (Which was groovy!!) after getting the new TV the week before Christmas, and coughed in his ear way too much, but around Friday night / Saturday morning, my throat got to hurting pretty bad, so I resolved to get in to see a doctor after Christmas. The doc put me on an antibiotic plus a steroid, and told me to rest. I am feeling a lot better now.
…and a bit sad. My mom passed away about 12 years ago, and her jewelry’s been sitting up in boxes at my dad’s place since then. Over the Christmas break, since all the girls in the family (me, my sister-in-law, and my two nieces) were there, we went through everything. I got first choice, as the only daughter, and got some really nice pieces I remember her wearing often. For my first day back at work, I’m wearing her good gold chain, earrings, and the watch she always wore. I got a bit misty when I took the watch into the jeweler’s at lunch to get the battery changed - I hadn’t realised her name is engraved on the back of it.
Got my new contract. It’s a doozy. Doubled the raise this year just because i asked. And a signing bonus. So it’ll be time to start looking for a new car once I get back from vacation!!
Apparently the blog aggregator/syndicator I submitted to last week not only posts tweets, but also to their Facebook page. It’s not even Noon and I’ve got 2.5x more hits this week than I did all of last week.
My first day subbing a kid got sick, but made it to the bathroom.
So, the first day back to school was also my first subbing day. I lucked out in that the teacher herself wasn’t sick, so I had plenty of prepared material to go over. It was a class of 1st graders and it was kind of fun. But also exhausting, I was running around internally with no idea what was going on while trying to project an attitude of having things under control. There were two or three kids who flat out couldn’t keep up, or even get on the right page to start with and I mostly just left them in the dust. I don’t have the experience to manage the rest of the class and spend two minutes just getting them to look at the right side of the paper.
BTW, prep for this was 4 hours of video on Bullying, Sexual Harassment, Student Confidentiality, Blood Borne Pathogens, and OSHA. With about 10 minutes of actual substituting advice. I just walked into the school, and the front desk person was covering for someone, and picked up a chromebook without a password and a laminated emergency evacuation sheet.
Perfect job for a stay at home. I can pick my hours and work as much or as little as I’d like. It’s not worth doing full time, it’s only about $10 an hour. But it’s good to pick up date and beer money. With my wife’s new job (Another happy making event) we’re pretty well set. And I’m making bee frames again at about $20 an hour, so spare cash is there to take.
