Finally dumped my iPhone and got a phone running Android after one too many instances of “you get one button to do everything” stupidity. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to make the voice recorder app only show a pause button, but if you change it to a different view, then you get a stop button. Want both at the same time? Don’t be silly. Oh, but if you switch to this other view, we’ll give you a “Resume” and a “Done” button together.
Man, it was a bear getting files off of the iPhone. Windows couldn’t copy the pictures to save its life. iTunes flat out ignored them. I had to get a license for a converter that would actually get the pictures, videos and voice recordings, but the pictures got changed into .heic format and had to be re-converted back into .jpg.
This may have come at a good time. Many people that have an iPhone 6 can no longer use it because the authentication servers don’t support it any more. They can’t even unlock them to retrieve the contents. I wonder how long it would have been before my iPhone 7 would have been bricked for the same reason.
The bad side is you pretty much get told "OK, now install this warranty-breaking firmware if you want it to actually be useful but it’s kind of neat past that. The firmware fix was very quick and easy and it responds well to the config tool (Vial).
One issue I’m seeing is my intent is that I have the top four buttons set for my KVM to do ‘Ctrl-Ctrl-1’ through 4 and I can’t seem to get this to work. I’ll have to mess with it more: THere’s a pretty robust Macro system and I already got that in an ugly loop (Configured ctrl-up which is the default ‘show all windows’ button for macOS, but configured it to hold the keys down with no release, which gets weird and cause tons of problems.
Hardware wise it’s fun and the config is on the device, not an app, so it travels with you if you move it around. The docs have to include the phrase “You could program a key to enter your credit card number, but this is a really bad idea so we don’t recommend it.”
16 regular keys (with the mandatory RGB, which I’ve set to “splash” so it lights the target and neighbors on keypress), three knobs (which have three ‘actions’ for turn clockwise, counter clockwise, and pressing down on the knob), and a tiny LCD which shows the active layers (which let each key have 4 main configs, and that’s not getting to the frankly ridiculous options for chording and such).
I got my 16GB of ECC RAM today, so that’s the last part before starting on the software for this new NAS machine.
YAY!
Note: I had ordered the wrong memory originally. If anyone here wants 16 GB (4x4GB) of Crucial DDR4-2133 memory, cheap, hit me up. Made in USA.
The return date passed while I was waiting on other parts to arrive.
2022 Subaru WRX Premium with a 6-speed manual. 7.5 miles on the odometer when I test-drove it this past Saturday and have got 400 miles on it so far. The only option it came with was the performance exhaust and a cargo liner.
My wife says the car is even fun to drive slow and it is. But it is even more fun to push this car, which is insanely easy and fun. I’ve been gentle with the engine break-in so far, and yet I can’t wipe the grin off my face whenever I’m behind the wheel. So I have another 500 miles to go before I can really explore more than 2/3 of the powerband.
I’ve always loved the WRXes; although some of the body styling choices over the years were kind of meh, I really like yours.
I drive a base model Corolla and probably will until they take the keys away. But I still appreciate more interesting cars; I just need that money to buy microphones and bass guitar pedals and mixers and preamps and speaker cabinets and 1/4" TRS cables and
Here are a couple of more photos I took this weekend. I did manage to get almost 1400 miles on it in 7 days and I am experiencing the full powerband now. It is by far the most insane and sane vehicle choice I’ve made that has 4 wheels on it ever. It is made for the backroads of a land carved by glaciers, no matter what condition the pavement is in.
This weekend I eBayed some parts for a ‘new’ computer for the living room. I think I’ve picked up everything I need. I’ll see if it comes together. I think I’ve got everything
HP Elitedesk 800 G3 Tower (no CPU, RAM, HDD)
Intel Core i7-7700 CPU
4x 4GB 2400mHz RAM DIMMs
MSI AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB video card
128GB NVME m.2 drive
Intel 802.11AC Bluetooth 4.0 WLAN card
I think I’m building a fairly high-end machine from 6 years ago. It’s all in under $500. Add a licence for Windows 10 and I’m right on the money. It’s a couple of generations better than the laptop I’m using now and I can actually use a discrete graphics card.
I haven’t built a computer in a long time. It’s kind of got me excited. I probably overpaid for it in a few ways, but I wanted to go through the entire process of researching exactly what would work together and sourcing the parts individually. That’s all part of the fun.
One thing I’m pretty sure I’ll need is a cable to convert 2 SATA power connections to a 6-pin for the video card. I’m pretty sure this proprietary power supply won’t have a connector. I want to see what arrives before I get one, though. I don’t know if it’ll have the 250 or 500 watt power supply. Probably the former. I can get one from China for around $60. Okay, it isn’t getting any cheaper.
Not mine, but I bought it for my wife for her 66th birthday.
ANVIL!
I want to stencil ACME on the side of it.
She wanted one for sewing for pounding seams flat and setting rivets. For years every one I showed her was either too big or comically small.
It’s a short length of railroad track with some profiled plywood ‘cookies’ glued together to make the base. Some rod, a bunch of nuts, and some custom cut/bent handles and that’s it. You can reverse the rail to get a flat or curved surface.
Wife got two promotions this year so she finally talked herself into a newer car. 2020 Mustang Ecoboost Convertible. It’s more than a bit zippy and we love having a convertible again.
