It’s a @Puma sighting!
This summer has been way too busy.
Wow…four years on, and my last reappearance is still the second most recent. I’m not sure how to feel about that.
We are definitely in the era when forums are quieter, more sedate things.
We haven’t had many new members sign up, but the old community is still here, if not quite as active.
People, especially the younger generation, don’t really do forums anymore. Us old farts are still here though. Welcome back.
I prefer a nice, quiet forum with active members than a hustle and bustle forum where world+dog posts allsorts of things.
On the quiet one you won’t get attacked or trolled for your opinion. On the busy one… it’s another story.
There’s a biiiiig difference between here and BYC, that’s for sure.
We talk about birds less?
There are also a lot of… idiots. Maybe not idiots, but certainly less educated. Okay, there are a lot of idiots too.
Edit: They also do not deal with trolls in the same way as I do.
im 27, this is the only forum ive ever used.
I’m 54 and this is not the only forum I’ve ever used. It is, by far, the best moderated forum I’ve ever used. Thank you very much @Nabiki and everyone else here.
The people here are very much self regulating. I think I’ve only ever had to step in a few times over the many years.
I’ve been to Stormfront. Cesspit full of vitriol and hate.
There was also an Afrikaans forum, but it dieded due to lack of interest.
Then I’m on the Smoothwall community forums. It’s dead, but every so often there’s life.
Also on a 4x4 forum for South Africa.
Moderator on MyBroadband. Currently we are having an issue with a pump and dump user, who creates an account, dumps allsorts of sick, religious porn on the forum and runs. We told the owner, and asked gim to implement a 60 day no picture and links post rule. He is not too keen about that, afraid it will chase people away, especially first timers.
Then a couple of ZX Spectrum forums.
And this forum. This one is really my favourite. It stands out from the rest, aloof, aloft.
I’m 47 next month. I’ve used a bunch and admin’ed quite a few. This and a couple others are all that’s left.
I remember some of the really horrible forums circa the early 2000s. View Askew studios used to have one that was hot garbage due to UI design even for the era and probably required a ton of moderation work. Same with Games Workshop, who even wackier kept theirs going far, far too long.
At least most have coalesced to something saner and workable.
If I was advising some small companies I might suggest just trying to ‘claim’ an appropriate subreddit, though. It’s a very different experience, though.
As toxic as the 40K fanbase is, I can only imagine the type of cesspool a forum would be.

I’ll go one better, the ZDNet forums, 1996-2002. Breaking all the time (multiple iterations of their software just fell over and died on the reg), terrible moderators, and some colossal tools posting.
I should know, I was one of those tools.

I think the only way to do that is by making it a private subreddit or not publicizing it. Public ones can quickly turn into a huge mess and the Reddit admins are useless until the company starts getting bad press.
Perhaps because…
