Hi, I'm Back!

 ah, the foolishness of youth

I’ve heard GW is actually trying to rehabilitate their stance. They’ve recently made statements that the community should be open-minded and accepting.

It’s an uphill battle as (for those unfamiliar with their games like Warhammer 40,000) they have the issue where many gamers don’t get the subtlety that everyone in the 40k setting is kind of horrible in their own way, especially the ā€˜good guy’ factions which tend to be fascist xenophobes.

It’s related to the issues I’ve had with some of Paradox’s computer games where some people are way too in character which is distasteful for (as an example) a crusades-era historical strategy game that models religion as a cause for war.

The old GW forums combined some bad moderation policies (mods would post ā€˜I am on duty’ posts; general apathy) with a creaky old forum:

Speaking of old forums, why did so many want to do a view similar to a Windows File Explorer Tree View and assume that made sense? A lot of bad ones seemed to do that for some reason.

I think the View Askew ones had some good sections at least. Some indie filmmakers probably got advice back then.

I haven’t watched Kevin Smith’s stuff in years and I’m worried there’s a lot of ā€œthe funny lines are said by horrible people and should not be emulatedā€ in them.

I’m backing the latest season of MST3K (still a few days left on Kickstarter!) and watched a couple of their live streams where they talk over and can hear the cast cringing at some old jokes they wouldn’t make today.

Also lots of misogynist neckbeards in that fandom. Women who play 40K are much braver than I am. and have way more disposable income.

As for the Windows Explorer file tree format, I was on a couple of those forums in the late 90s and even then it didn’t make sense.

I caught American Pie on tv last week and that has not aged well.

As for Kevin Smith’s movies, Dogma probably holds up best. I watched Jay and Silent Bob Reboot last year and, well…it is a thing that exists

I used to be a KS fanboy and just kind of fell off. It somehow felt like at least for his film work I grew up and he didn’t. He deserves some respect for other things, but I feel like he kind of stopped a lot of development of movie making skills some time around J&SBSB.

I’m not surprised Americans Pie has not aged well.

The MST3k thing has been interesting. There’s a few movie lines with slurs that were TV acceptable in the 90s that they drop the audio on now. They’re at least aware that it’s a different group now. (The newest batch of episodes will apparently have a woman as a host for part of the season even.)

The patient group I belong to for HCM used to have a forum, and they moved to FacePlant.
What. A. Mistake.

No real way to search effectively, no way to follow a thread. Anyone can pitch in anything - story or question or diatribe - and it all ends up just being a stream of consciousness with answers and new posts all getting jumbled and mixed together.

Beside all that, there’s the Wonderful World of FacePlant security, right?

Oh, plus the moderators have a decided left-wing bent, so if they want to rail about this politician or that it’s OK but no one else is allowed. (And it isn’t just me saying so… there was a big outcry from several people ā€œDon’t make this about politics… this is about HCM!ā€)

Really stupid move.

It’s been quite a while since Marshal McLuhan famously (if perhaps imprecisely) observed that ā€œthe medium is the messageā€ but we still have trouble grokking how the ways that we mediate our interactions (e.g. forum software choice) will change how we interact.

which is why we should go back to text-based BBSen again.

That brings back the memories.

I think teen ā€œsexā€ comedies just don’t age well in general. It’s cringeworthy and edgelord when they are first made, and that’s why the same jokes are told different ways every 10 years or so.

I think this is the thread to say we’re not dead? Because I’m not dead, just super busy with being a dad to two boys (one just turned 4 and my youngest just turned one). My wife handles the young one most of the time and I handle the 4yo, but it’s still hectic. Work is busier a bit as well because I got promoted right before the start of the COVID lockdowns to Sys Admin, which has actually made life a lot easier for me despite the occasionally crazy work hours.

Life for me has been interesting to say the least. I’m not as stressed out as before so I don’t complain as much, especially with a huuuuuge change that happened this past summer. Kind of a long story so I’ll compress it to a few sentences. We’ve had my wife’s sister and husband living with us since we became home owners back in late 2015, along with her parents. We get along with the parents just fine, but the sister and her husband (my brother-in-law) have been all kinds of crazy which escalated after they had two kids (also boys). This wasn’t crazy in the good sense so all of us pretty much wanted them out and finally, this past July, they managed to get approved for a rental home nearby and they moved out. That means a massive chunk of stress has been taken off my shoulders.

And then just last month, life threw a curveball that nobody expected and my 1yo was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease. Extremely rare, but if not treated properly, it could lead to major heart issues in later years. Poor baby had to stay in the hospital with mommy for five days hooked up to all sorts of monitoring equipment while he was treated. I’ve never been so worried in my life, but luckily, his treatment seemed to work like a charm and he’s been normal ever since. Docs will consider him properly treated if no high fever in another week. So yeah, that’s where I’ve been lately.

I know all about major health scares with infants/toddlers and I hope your son makes a full recovery. When my daughter was an infant, she had to have an MRI because there were questions about the proper development of her spinal cord. Turns out that she was fine and now enjoys life as a late teen draining her old man’s bank account.

Glad to see you back!

It sounds like life has been an adventure since you last checked in. I’m glad to hear that stress is on the decrease.

I hope your youngest makes a full recovery and lives a long, healthy life!

Is there a strikeout rule for ā€œI’m Backā€ appearances? If not, how about a record?

I don’t have any valid excuses for absence, other than being a social slug with nothing to contribute. And yet, here I am…again.

You going to stick around this time?

I will try, but the ā€œsocial slugā€ comment was more accurate than I’d like to admit. Are there any resources for recluses attempting recovery?

I recommend coming here and posting every day at a specific time.

We have a Discord if you want more ā€˜immediate’ interaction. It’s not that active, but then you might not want to install an app to see us talk about pets and such.

As I’ve finally rejoined the workforce in a part-time job with a wildly variable schedule, the advice may be difficult to follow, but given the source, I will see how dilligent I can be.:face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Has that invite expired? I just tried it and got told to sod off…
