Home Ownership

We started taking doors off:

We got the demo done. Monday will be working with the contractor to form up scheduling.

(Pic is from earlier in the day. We have since removed the cabinets and flooring as well as several other small items.)

When we were demolishing our kitchen 10 years ago, the Dragonlady insisted that I refer to her as Gozer, the Destructor.

Relative of Conan?

And added an unexpected plumbing charge to the tally.

Today’s fun:
While dealing with work issues, I find out the Appliance delivery is an hour earlier than the window was specified for. Luckily our contractor is there and is awesome.

He saw that the stove and fridge had multiple dents in them. Delivery guy tried to promise us 10% off, but we said no and asked for a non-dented fridge.

6 years left on our bond. Yay.
FWIW when we signed the bond on our smallholding, we noticed that it is for 10 years instead of the usual 20. So $wife and myself decided to keep it at that, since we can dodge a lot of paying off on interesr.

Sure it means no nice toys etc, and a shoestring budget. At least we saved ourselves from 16 years of indebtness.

We went for a 15 rather than the traditional 30 year loan on this place. We’re paying a lot more on principle than on interest 5 years in.

Yeah, when we refinanced we went for a 15-year amortization, but paid over 10 years. We’re paying mostly principal at this point and have about four or five years left before we’re mortgage-free.

We’re on a 30 year, but I always try to pay ahead a bit. It’s tough, as I do live in one of the more expensive areas of the US, albeit not as bad as NYC or most of California.

Noodle looks like he’s thinking “WTF is going on here?”

Pretty much! We’ve had him barricaded out of the room for the last few days.

This morning he got some play time (he’s getting older but still loves to play… just in shorter sessions) and tried to do his usual trick of taking his toy and staring wistfully at the counter where his treats are kept.

Said counter isn’t there any more, and won’t be for a few weeks. Nor are his treats there, either. He’s totally confused.

Luckily he gets alongside well with the contractor and his son who are doing the majority of the work.

Edit: Changed ‘history’ to ‘his toy.’

We’re on a 30-year mortgage but kicking roughly 10% extra in every month (P&I + 10%) so we’re approaching 50/50 P/I each month about 6 1/2 years into the loan. At this pace we’ll pay it off at about 22 years.

I’ve thought about kicking in more, but have decided to put it into 529s for the kids instead.

We also have the option of paying in extra on our bond, so will do it when it is financially feasible for us.

Currently we survive hand to mouth.

Finally finished most of the two story painting. Waiting on a response from someone to borrow their scaffolding to do the very top.

Current status: Sitting in bed with my laptop finishing sorting old pictures on several thumb drives so I can get them all into one spot and get some prints done for the wall. Easier on the body than painting, but draining on the mind.

It’s a beautiful room… $Wife would love it if it was looking at water.

Depending on the frame-style you like, I’ve been happy with a couple prints I’ve gotten from “Fracture” that are directly mounted on glass with no frames needed. Depending on the style you want, of course.

Not sure what I want yet. I know I want one as a canvas triptych for the front sitting room, and one as a canvas for my office. But I bought a bunch black simple frames at a sale last fall so I may just get a bunch of the pics of kids for those. And save the fancy stuff for my landscape shots. But I will definitely look that place up. I have a couple that would look cool like that I bet.

If you’re looking for artwork, I’m working on one that would probably fill the top section of that wall. It’s called “Rizak reclining”.
