Home Ownership

Here’s the site for Fracture. They’re kind of a neat look for some areas/some art. I’d probably consider them if I move and redo my office, but I also like the basic black frame look. They’re also good as I don’t think they gather dust the way framed stuff does.

A lot of podcasts advertise them. I haven’t heard any recently, but there’s almost always a deal on them.

We’ve had OTA TV ads 'round here, too.

I think I may have seen an OTA add for them, but I watch so little OTA TV these days.

Our list for the kitchen to finish is currently:

  1. Floor install
  2. Countertop templating/install
  3. Plumbing hookups
  4. Tile work
  5. Replace electrical outlets/switches.
  6. The “little stuff” like some low voltage lighting, rails to hang potholders and stuff on, and a Ikea pot rack holder for a back wall.

The electrical is the only thing we can really do ourselves at the moment.Maybe this weekend if weather holds out.

Tv15 was on the weather channel this am in case anyone wants a code for fracture. Gonna try it out! Love the idea of printed on glass. Not sure which one I want though.

Finally. Finished. Painting. The great room. And the foyer. And put the blinds up. And touched up the projector screen. Gonna straighten up my house, let the dogs out, and then tackle electrical. Then I’m putting everything away for one week and enjoying the tidiness and completion. Before starting either scrubbing the garage or redoing the downstairs bath. Bc I can’t stop. Can’t sit still.

What’s the ceiling texture? It’s kind of interesting… We’ve almost always done plain ceilings.

It’s a rose-patterned popcorn thingy. Do not recommend at all. I’m guessing it was popular when the house was built as all the subdivision houses have them. But they collect dust and you can’t paint them like you can a flat ceiling. Nor can you really remove it bc it’s like thin joint compound that is sticking up and if you scrape it off it ruins the part underneath. I tried it in one area and gave up. I’ve heard of people just putting up entirely new ceilings with fresh drywall to get rid of it. My next house will have flat ceilings if I have to put them there myself.

Yup, that ceiling really look interesting, but my first thought was dust.

Do popcorn ceilings have any impact on echos? Might be an issue in such a big room!

We were amazed at the amount of echo we got in the kitchen post-demo. It’s not a big room (footprint is about 12x12) but very tall (10 feet I think) so we got a lot of echo when it was empty.

We have the popcorn ceiling I see more often in one bathroom. The usual ‘messy custard’ kind of look. It does attract dust and all. We’ll probably remove it if we ever have to emss with that ceiling, and I think you’re right that it was very popular for a decade or two.

Any textured ceiling finish will cut down on echo, but in my experience, you notice it more when the room is empty. After being filled with furniture (a bedroom set, for example, or a sofa, chairs, & tables) the furniture will absorb a lot of the stray sound waves.

Speaking of electrical (@MSUAlexis made me think of it…)

My next gotta have:

I will ABSOLUTELY have both before the month is done.

Our living/dining room ceiling is done in sponge swirls, but they’ve cracked in the 80+ years of settling our house has had. I’ve considered putting up a fake cross-beam type of ceiling just to hide it and improve the resale. Actually, every room except for the kitchen and bathroom (not a combo, these are actually separate rooms) has it.

Looks useful. I need to do a bunch of minor electrical work this weekend. I’m hoping I can find my tools as I almost got shocked when we did demo.

(New outlets, GFCIs next to the ktichen sink, an outlet w/USB where everyone seems to plug in phones anyway, etc.)

Looks like we got templating for countertops scheduled for tomorrow finally! Then we pick apparently have to go somewhere and pick a slab.

Nice find!
The combo is available at Home Depot for $25! (not in my local store, but ship to store is free) That’s cheaper than the $30 at the voltclaw site or amazon.

Hey, that’s cool! It was just over $30 when I first looked at HD… they dropped in a day!

We got the countertop templating done. It’s pretty neat that they do it with a laser gadget attached to a tablet on a sturdy tripod.

Bad news is I didn’t have time to call to schedule or ‘slab picking’ but that’ll be Monday I guess.

I can’t help myself. I gave myself the week off, but I’m spending it cleaning the house and planning for the next project. Purging the garage and looking for furniture for the living room. It’s an illness, I swear. And I wanna buy this awesome house I saw that needs so much work but has good bones and ten acres with a pond and start working on it. There’s even enough room on one side of the pond to put in an actual beach, sand and all! Hopefully it’s still available in the spring. It has so much potential. What is wrong with me??:rofl:

I, too, spend way too long thinking about the next home when I should be working on the present home. Especially as I think we’ve settled on the idea that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to move right now as bot $Wife and I are ready to move out of our comfort zone home state if an opportunity presented itself.

Services like Redfin can be really bad for this, as they’ll email you houses you might be interested in for areas you’re focused on.

I don’t care about land, personally… Just need enough for the house and a little space in the back yard.

A bit of extra space would be great, as long as I don’t have to mow it.
