Home Ownership

It’s not really lumber related but don’t forget about Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore locations. I have one near me and I will be going there when I replace the bathroom sink downstairs.

Damn. I had never heard of them. I will try to get down to San Bernadino to take a look before I buy a washer and dryer.

I try to stay out of the 909 whenever humanly possible.

Well, it’s not like I’m going to Hemet, thank the gods.

Hehe, touche. Although Hemet isn’t all bad. My kitteh came from there.

Also pretty sure Hemet is in the 951, not the 909. Maybe I should expand my statement to the Inland Empire in general.

Hemet’s crime rate is still rising, and is above the national average. And that is for crimes against property and against people. I looked over a few listings in Hemet, and thought they were all over-priced. Then again, it is closer to LA, so prices go up (but not as bad as SF).

San Bernie is about an hour away. I might be able to make it down there next week.

Home Depot and Lowes both have crappy lumber, and no one to assist you.

The most recent addition here in Cincy is Menard’s. Their lumber yard (bigger than either competitor) is indoors, with drive-though lanes for pickup. Or, roll a cart from within the store if you only need a few things.

Their lumber is in better shape by being protected, and better to start with, AND their employees happily help you sort/ find/ load.

Both Lowe’s & HD in my area have indoor lumber. And the quality still sucks. It’s not a matter of indoors vs. outdoors - they just buy from low-cost, low-quality stock and there’s little if any sorting of the lumber in each bundle.

I was at Home Depot Wednesday, and it was difficult to find someone to help. But in the appliance section I got help immediately and the woman who helped me was very helpful and gave me a few tips for saving some money.

I didn’t go over to the lumber. But it doesn’t look like I will have much choice.

Okay, yesterday I “fixed” the skirting around the house (which means I shouldn’t have to worry about another kitten or three crying all night. I use the word fix lightly, because all I am doing is rehashing the mistakes made by a previous owner.

They did put the channels down for the bottom, but there is no j-channel for the top. The vinyl panels are just screwed in at the top, into a piece of aluminum with nothing behind it. The vinyl breaks easily, and screws just rip out of the aluminum.

I wish it were possible to charge the police for the damage they did to the skirting, but we all know how that goes.

I’ve had to re-evaluate my priorities, after a “break” in the weather this weekend. Temperatures are getting down into the low 50s. So I need to get the windows fixed, and fixed right. I also want to get thermal curtains for the windows, to try to keep some of the heat in. I’m getting more plastic to put over the windows on the inside, but I want to have whole windows before I start doing that.

Cheers.

Been there, done it. We have an 84 Lumber closer than the Home Depot I need to check out next time we need raw wood.

Yeah, I finally found a lumber company in the area. You would not beleive the number of “building materials” places in the area that carry everything except lumber.

Umm… what? Surely that’s the main “building material”?
So what do they stock then?

Knobs, hinges, drawer pulls, faucets, showerheads, paint & brushes & etc., light fixtures…
I’ve seen “building material” marketing on places that I would consider the equivalent of an Ace Hardware.

Pretty much everything else.

I’m going to need to replace some of my siding and trim very soon. That’s going to suck.

Tell you what, I’ll pay for your siding if you pay for my windows.

Heh, thanks, but I’ll pass. I don’t mind replacing the siding and trim, but I dread the painting.

Try stubbing some 2x4s in under there, either wedge them in or find somewhere higher to secure them, then attach you cladding to that.

@roadrunner the Ace by me does sell lumber.

I hate painting. I don’t mind drywall (but everyone I know seems to hate it) as long as it’s something where I can cover up edges with some trim or an outlet cover plate, but fsck painting.
