I just replaced my multi-function. It wouldn’t reliably show up as a USB device.
Couldn’t remember when I had bought it… but manual was copyright 2003, and the drivers were XP.

Which one is that? The Brother 23somethingW? Been eyeing that for dakwife, as she works out of the house most days and inkjet tanks are $$$

I have it back in my office and the WiFi connects to the router in my front room. Which is funny because the PC I have back there is a wired connection so if I print from it it goes via wire to the other end of the house and then is broadcast to the printer sitting right next to me.
I’m pretty happy, it even does duplex.
I think I’d been eyeing that or the HL-L2340DW, which The Wirecutter picked as their #1 in that segment (they basically said “get whichever is cheaper, you can’t go wrong”). It looks like the only appreciable difference is that the 60 has Ethernet, and the 40 is WiFi only. BFD.
They both even have Amazon Dash built in so it can automatically reorder toner when it gets low. In a $100 printer. The fsckin’ future is here, man.

Wiat, it’s a laser printer… and when you run out of toner it orders some on it’s own? And you paid how much?
According to Amazon, the printer is $100. Toner is…whatever Amazon’s getting for the cartridge that day.

I’ve got a thermal fax machine at $Work desk, actually. Crappy Brother machine, and it’s been down for a couple weeks waiting for a new roll as the Starter Roll included only had 30 pages!
For home I’m considering some specific needs. Definitely a laser, and I’d like color & maybe duplex. If this job gets extended I might convince the powers that be to let me work remotely on deployment days, so I may need fax support for my own sanity’s sake.
However, I removed/re-added my old Canon (which hasn’t had a proper Mac driver since 10.6 or so… I’m running Sierra) and it’s working OK, so I’m guessing it was just a glitch. New fax is back tot he end of the pile as I’ve got other tech in need of replacement.
Amazon Dash isn’t a big feature for me. I feel like it’s more a novelty than anything else.
It sounds like a lot of convenience for me. I’ve been procrastinating and forgetting about getting a new cartridge for the inkjet and we’re skating right on the edge. Dakwife also has a tendency to say in passing “oh, we need X” or “Y gave me an error, I don’t know what it was, I haven’t tried again and it was a few weeks ago” and then everyone forgets that anything happened (the last one was “oh, I haven’t been able to print for 3 weeks” and had I been told three weeks ago, I could have fixed it right then).
If the printerer can just order when it’s needed, it’s one less thing to have to remember. I honestly wouldn’t mind getting other stuff on “subscription” from Amazon or wherever, at the appropriate intervals, so I can just receive the item and that’s my trigger to do the needful (like replacing the HVAC air filter). But Amazon doesn’t always have the best prices on stuff.
I have total sympathy with not being told “X is broken, can you fix it” I’m just not sure I’m ready for a bunch of auto-ordering widgets in the house.
We have to order HVAC filters as they’re a weird size and I think it’s slightly cheaper to order direct from a supplier, but Amazon sometimes comes out easier in the long run, especially if I need other stuff.
This is what has kept me from jumping on board with dash, subscriptions, and their grocery box scheme. Most of what I’d want to use it for is way pricier.

I use it for stuff I’d buy whether it was on sale or not. Toilet paper, dish soap, stuff like that. Yeah, I’ll pick it up on sale, but usually when I need shit paper, no one has it on sale, and it can be on sale all day long and doesn’t help me if I’m in the thinking room out of TP for my bunghole.
I understand what you’re saying, but almost everything I checked was way overpriced. Plus, using the TP example - when I checked it was at least buck or two more than at the Wallyworld down the street, but then they tack on $5 per shipped carton, right? I’m guessing a 36 roll pack is going to dominate the box. All the sudden, I’m paying seven bucks more than I’m used to.
** Scratch that - I just looked it up…
36 double rolls at WM $16.98
24 double rolls at Amz $22.81
But the only package size I saw with the PrimePantry banner was a 6 mega roll pack for $6.97. Bah! Mega rolls don’t fit in my dispenser, nor does the adapter.
I think I’ll stock up at Wal-Mart.
Or the breakfast drink I like to have on my morning commute. A four pack is $5.96 at Wal-Mart. I know, kinda pricey, but still cheaper than Starbucks and I can grab it & go. Amazon’s prices are all over the place, but some examples are:

Ok, so I’ve just realized that I put way too much thought into that way back when I first heard about PrimePantry, because it all came flooding back. I’m gonna go find another activity before it is time for bed. 
And don’t get me wrong, I’m right there with you on this point. But I’ve learned to keep an eye on the backstock. When the last inner 9 pack disappears from my linen closet, it is on my list. There is a Walmart virtually across the street from my office that I can visit at lunch or on the way home if there is a pressing need. TP, paper towels, dish & laundry soap, gatorade - if we run out, there is something wrong with the world.
We are running in a one car world right now, and I’m mostly working from home. Since my wife has a 30-90 minute commute she doesn’t have time to stop before getting dearest daughter from school, and he lunches are often work lunches. If I do go into the office, then there is no vehicle with me, and while there is a grocery store right across the street, it’s a 6 lane divided road with no light for way too long, and no crosswalk where there is a light.
Then we hit the house and it’s home work and work out time, then dinner, and by then it’s 7 or 8 and bedtime is at 8:30 and no one wants to go anywhere anyway and we’re using napkins for TP because yesterday we used all the tissue paper.
The convenience of having a load of TP just appear by magic outweighs the additional price.
We go grocery shopping once every couple weeks, with a stop inbetween for stuff like milk, sometimes. Right now we haven’t done a real grocery trip for almost a month, it’s all run in and grab a couple things and keep going.

I’ve ordered iced tea mix (basically tea-flavored kool-aid, to be honest) from Amazon. It’s one of my biggest vices (I don’t drink non-diet soda when I can, I don’t smoke, rarely drink alcohol) and the local stores ran out for some reason for a couple weeks.
$Wife made fun of me a bit for ordering it, but on the other hand I think it improved my mood…
I think my head would explode if my schedule was that tight
