Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

Is it weird/creepy/uncool/stalkerish to text your neighbor at 11pm to tell him that his garage is wide open?

No. Next question.

Nope, very neighborly.

I am completely toddler’d out. I don’t want to hear toddler voice any more. 12+ hours is more than enough.

I find the best thing about being an uncle or great uncle is the ability to wind 'em up and then leave them with their parents. I take it escape wasn’t an option?

I love being a grandparent. Hey. he smells funny, might want to check that out.

Though I usually wind them up and then keep going, so I return them exhausted. They sleep the whole way home.

I’m at the roommate’s parents’ place for his mom’s birthday. His sister, her husband and their three year old son are here too. Don’t get me wrong, the kid is well behaved, but I’ve never really liked kids. Their voices go in my ears, rattle around painfully in my head, then scrape down my spine. I can only take so much before I get a headache and get cranky.

When people working the register in a store ask “did you find everything OK?”, they don’t really mean it and if you answer truthfully, it’ll make them lock up for about 5 seconds.

Definitely.

Just this weekend we didn’t find something I was looking for when i accompanied $Wife to the craft store (she needed puffy fabric paint, I needed plastic stripping) and we both just smiled and said “Uh huh” when asked if we found everything despite not finding said plastic stripping at all.

Try telling them that next time. Worst case, it’s somewhat entertaining for you. Best case, they point you to the product and you get what you need.

In my case, I was in JC Penney picking up new pillows as they had a big sale on home stuff, and took a look at linens while I was there because we currently only have one set of sheets for our bed. They had precisely one set that was the right size, a reasonable threadcount, and not overpriced. But it was the same color as our current set so I was vetoed by CINCHouse.

“Did you find everything OK?”

No, I didn’t. The sheet selection over there is really weak so I wasn’t able to get everything I needed.

“uh…sorry.”

See, after waiting in line at the one open register for 30 minutes, no. I’m not going back and then waiting again, or slowing everyone else down.

I remember when I had to regularly go to visit my ex-girlfriend’s sister and her horrible children. I was like a new toy to them. They were completely out of control and were acting out to get my attention, which I would not give them. I don’t have children of my own, and that’s in everyone’s best interest.

The very last time we went over, I had told the children repeatedly to leave me alone. Then, the ultimatum: if you don’t leave me alone, I’ll leave and never come back.

They acted worse. I got up, picked up my coat, walked out to the bus stop and went home by myself. My ex called me on my mobile telephone (a novely 15 years ago) and I explained what happened. She said that the kids were crying and that I should go back.
“They know nothing of consequences because of how they’ve been brought up. Maybe this will teach them something.”
“It isn’t your job to teach them anything!”
“WELL SOMEBODY NEEDS TO PRETTY SOON!”

I never went back, keeping my promise. I’m a terrible person.

No, you aren’t.

I had a similar experience with my nieces and nephew. One particularly bad road trip with the three of them and I’ve never driven with all three of them in the car at the same time since. Doesn’t matter how much I love them

I agree with @GITM
I also wholeheartedly agree with this:

You may well have wasting your time, but even a slight possibility of something worthwhile getting through is worth the attempt.

That, of course, would only be a bonus.
The real benefit from that was that you no longer had to deal with the horror

This would be all kinds of cool, 70 days to Mar is practical.

So, there’s a tourism campaign for Australia’s Northern Territory where they want to “see you in the Northern Territory”. Only they decided to use the letters C and U for “see you” and used NT to abbreviate the area. I wonder how long that will still be in effect since the Cheezburger site spotlighted this and pointed that looking at the logo from a distance means you’re going to see something other than they intended.

Based on that, their slogan of “The top end. Different from the bottom end.” also has a completely different meaning.

The Facebook page, if anyone wants to see for themselves.

Lesson to be learned: using letters that sounds like words instead of the words isn’t always a good idea. “Weird Al” Yankovic had something to say about that.

Let’s see… $90,000 for an acre of land, about $500,000 to build my dream house… If I sell everything I have here, after taxes and paying off the mortgage I would have just about enough money to buy the house and get me and my cats there (New Zealand), with nothing left over. I just need a job.

Huh. There’s sure alot of steps with a business…

Isn’t that a term of endearment in that part of the world?

Unfortunately there won’t be many (if any) IT jobs in Hawera. You would be looking at Auckland or Wellington, or possibly Christchurch for that. Though the Christchurch IT market is a lot smaller.
Auckland is the biggest city, but house prices reflect that at an average of almost $1M
I live in Wellington and my house is a very nice one and worth around $500K, maybe a bit more. That’s about average for the area.
The NZ government is in Wellington and that affects a lot of the IT market. Wellington also has some company head offices, but probably most of the company head offices are in Auckland.

If you are ever serious about moving here I can give you a much better run down than that
