Years ago, we’d get chastised for staying inside and watching TV or being on the computer for long periods of time. Now it’s a legitimized survival plan.

ArsTechnica is having a membership drive. Get 20% off a ++ sub with code springPlusPlus20 and a YubiKey! I’ve been meaning to sign up for a long time, and finally pulled the trigger. It loads so much longer with no banner ads!

And then there’s this.

Making me consider subscribing, at least.

I went ++ last year. :sunglasses:

Can…can we just pool some money and get them to do increasingly weird stuff (commensurate with the amount of cash raised) to him? I don’t even need the subscription. Maybe donate it to charity or something?

So the local supermarkets are pushing curbside pickup. Sounds good, right?

There’s a few problems, though. Before I go into a list, let it be known I really like the people at my local supermarket (which is why they’re unnamed):

  1. It’s massively overloaded right now. Understandable.
  2. The above means that i got texted at about 12:45 that my order was ready (scheduled for 1:00) and I was there by 12:55. Called (which took a half-dozen tries) and it took about 25 minutes to get my order actually out to me.
  3. When I called in I got a receipt for my actual ‘packed’ order. Which was missing three things. One was swapped out, the others just ignored. This included the all-valuable toilet paper which was, of course, the primary reason I did the order. (For the record, we’re low but not out here.)
  4. Due to #1, there’s no availability for a second attempt at an online order through the next week at a minimum.

I would, with the current crisis, be totally cool if curbside became the standard. Let the supermarkets chill a bit (they’re massively overstressed) by only allowing a small number of people in at one time. But they need to get better at curbside orders: If I reserve a reasonable TP order, it needs to be set aside and not sold out from under me.

Our closest store’s curbside is currently scheduling at least a week out… so better plan carefully!

And all of the coveted items are “in store only.” In other words, they won’t even try to make any promises about availability. No TP, bread, Purell, etc. Have to park and walk in to be surprised and/ or disappointed.

Curbside looks like a non-option here. As you said, there’s no open spots for at least a week out.

I broke down and ordered some ‘industrial’ sized rolls as emergency supplies. Also paper towels like for a business-style dispenser.

We’re usually pretty well stocked for TP (for my bunghole). I managed to find a 12-pack at the pharmacy a week ago, but none any other time I’ve visited a grocery. The shelves are completely bare. We still have about 20 rolls left now. That should last a while, but my sense of security is gone.

I may have to start cruising by the stores every morning as soon as I get up just to see if I can pick up some more. It’s a short 10 minute walk, so not a real problem. There are a half-dozen stores in walking distance I can check.

I guess that’s one way to get my steps in.

This headline and picture could be scary for people who know me. At first glance that car looks just like mine.

It’s amazing how fast you can eat a dozen boiled eggs when they’re bite size.

On the plus side, they shouldn’t take as long to boil in the first place. Of course, peeling the little bitty things is probably a pain in the neck and fingertips.

I think she has scissor, if I remember correctly.

The quail egg scizzors work for raw eggs. Not so well for boiled eggs. They only take 5 minutes for hard boiled eggs.

I know what you mean about sense of security. I lucked out at Costco last weekend - they’d just got a shipment in and had a staff member handing out packages, so I managed to get a 40-pack. That should last us through this.

Geez, that was awful.
That reminds me… On the way home from work on Thursday, I saw a pickup run a red light and slam into two cars. I was on the feeder road in the straight/right turn option lane*, turning right onto the street I live off of, but behind a slow-poke at the light. Light turned green, slow-poke and car in straight only lane went, and as I was turning, I heard tires squeal and turned my head just in time to see the ass end of the pickup jump in the air as it hit both cars. It was pretty freaky.

*There are 6 lanes there: U-turn, left only, left/straight optional, straight, straight/right optional, and right only. It can be very busy.

I have never seen weather like this. It is raining on the left side of my house, but not on the right.

In Indiana we call that Tuesday.

I’m more bored now that I’m working again than I was when I wasn’t. I’m chained to my desk while students are working just in case they have questions rather than going off and doing something.

I still love working from home, though. I can take advantage of the 10 minute breaks to do stuff around the house and I don’t have to waste time commuting.
