Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

Sourdough starter is Tamagotchi for adults.

I think a lot of people have dove into it with the current kerfuffle as it gives them something to do. I’m still working 5 days a week (6 last week…) and I feel like the days run together a bit.

On the plus side I’ve finally mostly learned the neighborhood recycling/trash pickup schedule. Since I’m home so much now.

Same here. We’ve been told, officially now, that we won’t be back in the office until September 8th. On the plus side, that means I get to work from home throughout the summer, which will be nice. But, yeah, I have to remind myself what day it is sometimes.

1 more week off. I was starting to feel a bit weird last week, but I guess that was just me learning to relax.

They’re pushing too get us back in early July, but I’m hoping they’ll walk it back. It’s kind of pointless.

ā€œBut we need to be able to collaborateā€ - You know, when we are limited on how many people can be in conference rooms, need to maintain distance, and are wearing masks.

Then use tools like Teams etc to do so. Not difficult.

Only smallminded managers will find any excuse to get people to the office where they can be micromanaged properly.

Found the real reason Washington and Oregon are so wacky.

It’s all starting to make sense now…

The Dragonlady got a form to fill out for work. She has been put on ā€œdesignated emergency leaveā€ which means she still has her job (if/when the city decides to hire the library staff back).
Two of the questions seem to be a bit directed.
Does anyone see the problem?

  1. Please confirm that you can return to work at a physical location (branch/department).
    Yes
    No
  2. If no, please specify the limitation/restriction preventing you from returning to work in a physical location.
Related to COVID - child care
Related to COVID - personal health concern
Related to COVID - health concern of family member

It seems that your options are to return to work without any reservations, or that if you have any concerns you can’t.
Is it not possible to have a position that states that you are willing to return to work but that you are still concerned about the situation? Why does the second question only apply if the answer to the first is NO?

Also, you could only choose one of the options. What if you had multiple reasons?

Sorry, but I feel that this was made in haste and will give bad data. Then again, I used to work at a national, governmental statistical agency and worked with survey data all day long. Maybe I’m too close to this issue.

I can’t help but wonder if those questions are borderline illegal.

It seems like they’re fishing for a reason to not invite certain individuals back.

WA supply chains are still sorting themselves out a bit since we allowed private sales of liquor a few years ago. I don’t miss the high prices and low accessibility of the state-run stores, but I always buy on military post anyway. The prices, unfortunately, are only slightly cheaper than buying on the economy, even though there are no taxes.

I really miss AZ booze prices on post. The $22 bottle of brandy I liked down there is $38 at Costco here.

Private company and got similar questions. (Very private, in fact… Overall I’m glad to be working for a company that isn’t publicly traded and held to stockholder expectations every year.)

Nothing is set in stone: My boss has said there’s a mix of responses to his individual questions during meetings. Some have said ā€œI want to leave the house ASAPā€ some said ā€œI have a good reason to keep working from home.ā€ and I’m in the middle.

We also had a mandatory training that basically said, ā€œWhen you come back into the office wash your hands and wear a mask. Follow other guidelines.ā€

I’ve had really rotten luck making pancakes this year. They come out a bit doughy and I keep thinking how can I thin down the batter enough to get circular pancakes instead of these misshapen lumps where the batter spreads out on the griddle at a glacier’s pace. Waiting for them to cook, I re-read the directions and realized I put 1 cup of flower into the mix instead of 1 tablespoon. Got a sneaking suspicion I had the same brain fart the two previous times I made a batch.

You also probably meant flour unless this is some sort of weird recipe (perhaps gluten-free). Sorry, had to point it out.

I use Golden Malted pancake mix, which is basically pre-mixed flour and ā€˜other stuff.’ Has a pleasant vanilla scent and tastes good.

I reject your reality and substitute my own, one where you can make flour out of flowers.

So, a co-worker mentioned making toast, and my random mind went to ā€˜doe snot toast’ - no one got it. I started trying to explain it, and just ended back up here . . .

I think the rat still has my sould stashed away some where . . . .

What is a sould? Soul?

Never guessed that Ratty is a hoarder, mebbe I should be careful round him, innit?

It is a reference to my old ZOT!

  • I mistyped ā€œSoulā€ as ā€œsouldā€ in a couple posts and it stuck.

Naw, you’re pretty safe unless you wear women’s shoes.

I stopped counting the number of times lately that I’ll be doing something, put something down to go get another thing to do something with the first thing … and then not be able to find the first thing. I mean, I JUST HAD IT IN MY HANDS! Then, I spend 20 minutes wandering back and forth in the general vicinity between where I was working and where I went, trying to find the first thing.

I’ve never NOT found the first thing, but I’m getting a bit frustrated with it.
