Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

At the rate things are going, I was expecting an alien invasion today.

Disappointed. Going to scream at them for a manager.

Thankfully, there’s only a couple of times a year I have to wear earplugs so I can sleep, but tonight’s one of them.

I always thought that iambic pentameter sounded like someone introducing themselves ā€œHi, I am Bic Pentameter, pleased to meet youā€

Apparently I am not the only one to think so.

Many autistic people are highly intelligent.

As a result, many become scientists.

And that’s how autism causes vaccines.

After several days of noticing lights dimming a bit and hearing the desk fan slow down at random times, I look over at the UPS and see that a drop of just 6 volts is enough to cause this. It’s a tiny brownout, but it’s noticeable. The way the lights and fan are acting, I’d expect it to be a 20% drop instead of 5%.

/me waves at all the old names I see posting here still…

It’s been a while! Welcome back.

Long time no see. Welcome back.

Mythbusters, in a tiny but noticeable way, helps restore my faith in humanity.

Read a quick items about the hosts the other day. While they work OK together, neither considers the other a friend and they do not plan on doing more together.
They both agree their styles are just too different.

Yup. Jaimie never likes being on camera and was apparently not happy most of the show. I am watching some episodes on Hulu and they have one special on locations where he grumbles about the first season that was shot in his shop. Even then he mentions it was disruptive. I think he’s been stronger about that off-camera.

I think Adam has made comments to the effect that they can go months without talking and there’s no ill will, but it was a situation where they went from ā€˜boss-employee’ to ā€˜partners’ and there was friction

I compare it to Penn & Teller who have also repeatedly said their relationship is a work thing, not a friendship, despite being friendly with each other. They spent a lot of their early years living together and are quite happy to have separate lives… but will help the other if asked without question.

I’d love to sit in on a dinner with the four of them. In my mind’s eye it’s two tables at a diner. Penn and Adam are the hyperkinetic couple talking about three subjects at once, swinging arms to enunciate, while Teller and Jaimie just quietly and orderly eat their mean and have an almost whispered conversation about some esoteric topic.

I should write weird but SFW fanfiction.

Next year, CoG will have been around in one form (and forum) or another for twenty years.

I was contracting at Hewlett Packard in Vancouver, WA (my second job since graduating from university in June 2000) when I first ran across the first page or two of tickets. I shared the link with my coworkers and single-handedly shut down the desktop support team for about an hour.

I get that everyone is stuck at home so when we’re working, sometimes home blends into work.

But lighting up a cigarette in the middle of a meeting, with your camera on, seems a bit too far.

I dunno, I’ve had some meetings as of late that make me want to pour some bourbon.

I’ve heard of it being called the Red Binder Solution (Anyone remember that?)

I still have a pic of that somewhere at work. Yes, I’ve always wanted to make one of those. I probably should, with all this talk of making flask books. Even just for a demo piece.

6 shot glasses, though? That’s a team.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, and one of the rare times I go deeper than ā€œdumb jokes and trying to be empathicā€ but here it goes:

Change is an inevitable part of life. If you are unwilling to accept that things change, you are at a risk of being left behind and growing increasingly distant from society.

This doesn’t mean all change is good… But it also doesn’t mean it’s all bad. You need to be open and consider if change is actually good for you and gets you to challenge yourself in good ways and come out the other side a better person.

@Lee_Ars, nice article on SCW, thanks!

Getting near to 50% of my life. Different crew back then. I was still in the guard when I found this place, lol and still in IT. I haven’t had an IT position in 15+ years… You weren’t even in the military and now you are looking at retirement soonish with you weird uncomfortable rank.

Is anyone still posting that was on the Cleveland trip? MsTanja and I carpooled, Nick and his wife were there, I can’t remember who else.

Looks like I can’t deride Windows any more for not knowing that a file name like b3aa should be sorted after b012. Linux does this, too.

What’s the point of a rehearsal dinner? I’ve been eating dinner all my life, I’m pretty sure I’ve got it down pat now.
