Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

For a wedding I presume? Usually it’s after a run-through of the ceremony. I think the intent is they’re for people involved in the ceremony, but they’ve evolved so it seems to be 2/3rd of the wedding guests sometimes.

IME, it’s the wedding party plus a subset of guests, usually friends of parents and/or folks coming from out of town.

Traditionally, it’s one of the few parts of the wedding paid for by the groom’s family, but it’s the 21st century now so :man_shrugging:

In theory it’s also more casual than the actual wedding.

There’s a recent web meme of ‘ignores war anniversaries’ of the format:

Today is the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Why isn’t anyone talking about this?
(Above dated July 9th)

The thing is they tend to be varying amounts of wrong. For the above, it looks like most ‘official’ end dates would be far different days and I can’t find any ‘observed’ date. Another recent example features Desert Storm and had the wrong month for something that spanned less than two months and is pretty heavily documented.

I’m suspicious it’s some weird ‘coded message’ thing but I admit I may be paranoid. More likely it’s trying to stir up outrage. The wrong dates annoy me.

Supporting the troops is fine, but at least get the dates right.

Narrator: It’s not actually about the troops.

I tend to discount any post that includes “why isn’t anyone talking about this” because invariably quite a few people are. Aside from that, pretty much every day is historically important somehow; there are only 365 1/4 of them, after all.

Fair enough. In general, I do find any social media post with “Why isn’t the media talking about this?” to mean, “Why isn’t his the only thing anyone is talking about, despite that being ridiculous and not how media works? Also, I did not actually look to see if this is being talked about.”

The military/historical event ones bother me for some odd reason. I’m expecting one around June of next year asking why no one is talking about the anniversary of 9/11.

Writing “Why isn’t anyone talking about this” is either a sign your feed is over-curated to the point you are only seeing things that reinforce your perspective

or you are not being a serious person and just trying to score points with people who share your perspective.

Odd day yesterday. On the way home, the bus was getting full and the driver told those waiting that three people could get on. One gal was so determined to be one of them that she dashed to towards the door, slipped and bonked her head against the bus, giving herself a mild concussion. Just shows what happens when you’re in too much of a hurry.

I almost always have the luxury of not being in a hurry to get where I’m going. If someone is driving like an idiot or doing idiotic things like that, I just let them. I can wait. Maybe they have to get home to a child or parent or nervous pet, or will be late for a doctor’s appointment or something. Maybe they’re on their way to a job that is very important to them. None of those things apply to me, so I am willing to let them go. I’ve done enough planning that my needs are not so immediate. Planning is winning.

Why is the mailbox key missing, and is it a sure bet it’s in my wife’s car?

Found this in a backup file from an old web server as a tiny bit of CoG circa 2007:

Same here. If they’re in that big a rush-hurry-quick, they can by all means overtake and pass, I’ll keep on puttering along, taking my time.

If Walter White is the one who knocks, does he knock four times?

Three times. Twice on the pipes if the answer is no.

I was today years old when I found out that Heath Ledger’s character in A Knight’s Tale was based on a real historical figure…

Based very, very loosely
I’m pretty sure they didn’t rock out to Queen back in those days. I’m prepared to be wrong on that point though.

Probably didn’t speak modern English either. I think the ‘joke’ is its using a lot of modern sports/entertainment idioms swapped in for era-relevant equivalents.

I’m not sure how I got this question wrong:

Even the reporters for Breaking Cat News agree it’s time once again to pumpkin spice all the things.

Anyone have any experienced opinions on beer growlers? I’m thinking about getting this one:

It is a little pricey, but it is pressurized. From what I understand, once you remove the first serving from a regular bottle, the rest will go flat pretty quickly. (even with a 32oz one) I’m not going to drink it all in one day, and $Wife doesn’t drink beer, so having it keep through multiple servings and for a week or more is a big plus.
