Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

I’m not using Lr at all (yet… I installed it during our lunch break). What I got from the conference is that Lr will handle most of my basic “developing” needs, but there are still things I’m going to want to do in Photoshop. And, of course, the photo manips I’ve been having so much fun with are definitely a PS thing.

The nice thing about LR is that you can open PS from within LR on the photo you are editing. And LR is a powerful editing program itself so I have little need to wander out of it. But it helps to shoot in a RAW file format using either program since it’s all the data contained in that RAW file that gives you the wide latitude in pushing those pixels around.

Yeah, I’ve been shooting in RAW for a while now. I’m just hoping that Lr will get me actually cataloguing my many photos better. I love the concept of the colour flags.

I took some panorama shots a couple of weeks ago. I shoot raw/jpeg and I tried to stitch the jpegs together. The result wasn’t great.
Then I stitched the raw files together and it was absolutely seamless.

Most often jpeg is exactly what you need, but sometimes you just need raw

Not for edit work. JPEG is compressed data with a hugely reduced amount of colour information (not to mention the blocky pixelation you can end up with).

Edit in RAW, export to JPEG for sharing / anti-social media.

While Punxsutawney Phil gives a general idea of what the weather will be like for the next 1.5 months, I may have discovered a more immediate indicator. For the last three years, when the crocuses bloom in my yard, the weather gets really cold within the week. I want to ask the, “Guys? What are you doing? It’s not spring yet.”

And when I say “in my yard”, that’s literal. They keep popping up in the grass. I’ll try transplanting them to a flower bed, but they’re there again the following year.

Most often I don’t need to edit - and therefore jpeg is exactly what I need

We used to have a Magnolia tree in the front yard, and the number of years it started to bud and bloom and then the buds got killed off WAY exceeded the years we actually saw Magnolia blossoms.

Why did I get two calls from the UPS Store at 6:30 AM today?

Wrong numbers?

They really wanted to sell you a UPS?

Unless you have certain food allergies…
My long-suffering niece has a frightening amount of foods that cause her whole-body, systemic reactions… and dairy is some of that array.

I am unfamiliar with this effect.

I think I figured it out. Some lady from the UPS Store called and left a message yesterday for someone who is not me. From her accent it sounds like she’s in the southeastern US. Which would put her in the Central or Eastern time zone. So it was 8:30 or 9:30 where she’s at when she was calling me. Sucks for the person she’s actually trying to get a hold of.
