Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

My daughter lost the key to a bike lock I owned for 15 years in two days.

Funny Or Die is kind of like The Onion. Without the wit and without the humor.

I watched 5 minutes of the VMAs last night. It was (Iā€™m told) Nicky Minaj & Taylor Swift.

WTF did I witness?

@dakboy, MTV no longer exists in the form you remember it and hasnā€™t for quite some time.

I mean, if I were to describe what Nicky Minaj did during her act, Iā€™d need to use a courtroom doll to show you where she was touching herself. She also had one of her male backup dancers with his head under the tattered rags that passed for her skirt with his nose apparently lodged in herā€¦

Iā€™m no prude, I didnā€™t see anything wrong with it when Britney & Madonna kissed on stage, but seriously, WTF is wrong with these people!

And donā€™t even get me started on how bad the lip sync was!

Apparently there were more than a few catfights going on, a comedienne is getting blasted for a comedy she did for ā€œfuck the stripper copsā€, Kanye announced his candidacy for President (2020)ā€¦

I didnā€™t miss it. I didnā€™t watch it either.

Thatā€™s because the music has no substance. If it did they wouldnā€™t need all these distractions.

Which is kind of why I like Taylor Swift. She reminds me of a lot of 80ā€™s music.

Catchy beat, singable lyrics, and no real deep meaning beyond the actual words in the song.

As a side note, letā€™s remember there are things worse than Miley Cyrus.

ā€œHi, Iā€™m a high functioning psychopath, do you want to be my girlfriend, weā€™ll be together until the day you die.ā€

And this is why I think there should be a method of tracking your childrenā€™s texts without them knowing, at the very least, until theyā€™re paying for their bill themselves. This is insane. You can even see from the transcript that this boy was insecure and looking for someone to tell him it wasnā€™t as bad as it was. Apparently, this is what can happen when someone does the opposite.

But holy hell, how does a girl end up like that? I know teens are crazy stupid and do cruel things, but this takes the cake. Thing is, Iā€™m not entirely sure how the law will hold her down. She suggested that he do it, but it doesnā€™t make her a murderer. Worst I can think of is maybe on cyberbullying or something of the like?

Best comment Iā€™ve read thus far:

Yes, what she did is evil and deplorable. No doubt. But it always strikes me the people who say ā€œshe should be given a bag or a nooseā€ or ā€œshe should be executed like verminā€ or some such thing. That doesnā€™t really make us any better or more dignified than her, does it? All life (even hers) matters, and while I donā€™t condone her actions, I also would never wish a horrible death on ANYONE. Canā€™t we be a bit more civilized and respect the decency of human life at all times?

ā€œAll life matters.ā€ Nice statement, but utterly meaningless if not put into context. This girlā€™s life mattered but the manner in which she employed her life leading to the personā€™s suicide - should have very direct and appropriate consequences. All life matters and All actions matter. Her evil, anti-social criminal actions removed her life ā€˜matteringā€™ equal to value of a law-abiding individual. All life matters must be viewed through the prism of oneā€™s ACTIONS. And then oneā€™s life might matter ā€˜moreā€™ or ā€˜lessā€™ or not all all. Otherwise this viewpoint - without examination - is the viewpoint of an extremely shallow-end-of-the-pool thinker.[/quote]

OK, so apparently itā€™s cheap & easy to get a HAM radio & license nowadays. So Iā€™m kind of curious about checking it out.

I just donā€™t understand the reasons for doing so.

Talk to @Sig. He seems to like it. And I hear you can call the ISS.

But can you call ISIS and heckle them?

I googled ā€œwhy should I get a HAM radio licenseā€ and the top 5 or 6 domains are all ones I think Iā€™ll keep away from my work browser history

Hahaha, I could see that being a problem.

I wrote about it a little when I first got into it here:
https://sigspace.wordpress.com/2013/07/06/we-get-signal/

I havenā€™t done nearly as much as Iā€™d intended, mostly owing to lack of time and money (more time than money). Interestingly, it inadvertently led me into volunteering with the county emergency management, which has sort of turned into my actual new hobby.

Today I discovered exactly how great Her Majestyā€™s Department of Transport really is at maths.

In preparing to take your HGV Driving Theory Test, you can complete several mini tests that arenā€™t as strictly regulated as the actual mock exams (and obviously nowhere near as strict as the actual isolation booth in which you take your final exam). The mini tests consist of ten questions. The pass mark is 85%.

Because maybe you can get half a question right? Maybe? Nope. And if you answer 8 questions out of 10 correctly, you see ā€œPASSā€ when you complete the mini test, but ā€œFAILā€ when you get to the summary screen. Obviously 8/10 canā€™t be a pass if you need 85%, so how on earth does it throw up the pass screen? I justā€¦ my head hurts!
