RIP Thread

Thank you all for your kind words.

Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane co-founder, 74

Terry Wogan, British TV and radio broadcaster.

I listened to his radio programme during my morning commute until was moved to a later slot, primarily for the banter between him and his team.

not saying it not saying it not saying it

You mean you are not going to quote Clarence Darrow and say…

I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.

Yes, I know a straight-line when I see it.

No, I am not going to sing a jingle from Wizard of Oz.

Do you mean:

Dorothy: “How do you talk if you don’t have a brain?”
Scarecrow: “Well, some people without brains do an awful lot of talking don’t they?”

Or maybe:

Wizard of Oz: “I think you are wrong to want a heart. It makes most people unhappy. If you only knew it, you are in luck not to have a heart.”

Or:

Dorothy: “What would you do with a brain if you had one?”

(And yes, I’m pretty sure I do know which one you really mean )

So, some thoughts on her life? Let’s try to avoid the 'link ‘n run’, please.

Oops.

I think it’s rather… sick? that Prince replaced her with “Appollonia”, who looked similar enough (at least in the movie) to be her twin.

I know she went through some rough times. The last few months seems like they were even harder. R.I.P.

Former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, 93

He was the only Secretary General to serve a single term, as the United States blocked his renewal in 1996 due to ongoing friction with the Clinton administration.

Sadly, Harper Lee has passed at 89.

You may remember that Berkeley Breathed is a fan of Harper and she figured into some of his stories involving Opus the Penguin. Here’s the link to the post he has that shows her fan letter to him, asking him not to end the series which was called “Opus” at the time. “Don’t end Opus”

Umberto Eco, Italian author and philosopher, 84

Perhaps best known for The Name of the Rose, which was made into a movie starring Sean Connery.

He did a fantastic job of illustrating the kind of thinking common during the Inquisition (including eunuched monks).

George Gaynes, remembered as Commandant Eric Lassard from the Police Academy movies. Passed away last Monday.

Oh, man. He was awesome.

Samuel Willenberg, the last known survivor of the Treblinka concentration camp, 93

I have tried to make it through Focault’s Pendulum several times. I will likely take it on my next vacation and attempt again, which means I am planning to tackle a specific book nine months in advance. I hope to make it through ti this time, but for some reason I always seem to drift off from it mid-way through.

Sonny James, Country Music Hall of Famer, 87

His first hit was “Young Love”. Just saying those words brings back the sound of his voice.
