RIP Thread

Tomie Gaines, 93

He was one of the last of the Buffalo soldiers. He served as a medic in World War II in Italy, Japan, and the Philippines, and was a survivor of D-Day.

And after all that, he left the Army as a private.

He was still alive? I’m going to have to go listen to some of his stuff now.

My grandfather went in as a shake and bake sergeant after basic, since he volunteered at 23 he was an old man, and made it up to staff sergeant running a whole platoon, but came out as a private first class. He was wounded and we think he lost his assumed ranks when they moved him to the MPs. He didn’t talk about the war much, he went through Africa and through Sicily and Italy, and was on a troop transport headed to Japan when the war ended.

And now I know why. Apparently when you changed regiments it was common to go back to a private’s rank even if you were a sergeant in your old unit.

My grandfather could never get past PFC in his stint during Korea. They kept promoting him to PFC over and over again; some kind of paperwork SNAFU. I’m sure they could have worked it out, but he had no intent of staying in once his draft time was up.

He’s talked more about Korea in the last two years than in the previous 50.

Maddox Lawrence, 21 months old

Disappeared with her father from a mall parking lot Saturday night and he left a note implying he intended to harm both himself and Maddox. Cops caught up with him last night in a disguise and found her this morning.

I kinda hope they keep him in general population wherever he’s incarcerated. I know it’s a little torch & pitchforky but FFS, it’s his own daughter.

I cannot conceive of a situation where I could do that to my children unless I was completely insane and didn’t know what I was doing.

I feel very sorry for the girl’s mother. Imagine having to live with the fact that your child’s father did that to your child.

The guy had a history of emotional issues.

It’s now coming out that the daughter had been doing cancer treatment and he was jealous of the attention & care she was getting. One article says that he killed her about 45 minutes south of where they were last seen, then he brought her back to that area & dumped her body in the inner harbor. It just gets more fscked up the more I hear.

SlySoft, developer of anti-DRM applications.

Somehow, I don’t think the “regulatory requirements” cited on their website is Obamacare.

Shit. I’ve been using SlySoft products for probably 15 years now. I loved that it let me skip past all the stupid shit on DVDs and just watch the movie. Plus, yes, I did a lot of video copying in my day.

Walter Kundzicz, 97

Walter helped define the genre of “physique” photography in the 50s and 60s, when it was considered immoral to photograph men who weren’t clothed from head to toe.

He survived an obscenity trial, only to be ripped off by a person who claimed to be interested only in protecting him and his work.

“Have you gentlemen picked up any of these models to prove your contention that these guys have erections?”

It’s a question that would change Walter Kundzicz’s life forever. Presented to police and post office representatives regarding a set of images that were at the heart of an obscenity trial against the photographer, the question seemed to hold the future of male nudity in the balance. The photos in question, taken by Mr. Kundzicz, featured nearly naked models, cocks cleverly sheathed in translucent fabric, apparently sporting fully engorged members.

When the cops and postal flunkies responded to the judge’s inquiry in the negative, he promptly through [sic] out the case, pointing out that if they hadn’t seen the goods, they had no way of knowing what was wood and what wasn’t.

I just learned that he passed away Monday evening

Lennie Baker, 69

You may remember him as the chubby sax player from Sha Na Na.

And I just found out another founding member, Dennis Greene, died last September (he was the only black guy in the group)

Dragline is finally makin’ it out of the box… RIP George Kennedy.

Joey Feek, country singer, 40

It’s been coming. Her husband has been blogging about it regularly.

She’s from just a bit up the road from here, her step daughters went to school with middle child.

Mythbusters is officially finished.

They of course went out with a bang. 2.5 tons of anfo worth of bang.

The post-finale round table show with all 5 of the stars was really sweet though.

I caught some of the countdown to the finale episodes yesterday. The broadcast info in the online guide from my cable box was confusing. It said these were “new” episodes that were first broadcast in 2016, but since they had Kari, Grant and Tory on them, they had to be repeats that were “new” to that channel.
