The only good thing to come out of The Outsourcening is that I’ve been converted to hourly, again, which includes (a) overtime that specifically includes any phone or email use for work outside work hours, and (b) lunch time is explicitly not work time due to New Management’s general stance of trying to deal with workers in every state and several countries, including a large retail wing.
The plus side is I can’t do work while I’m at lunch and weekend call-outs are now totally billable.
The downside is project movement has slowed. I think we may have actually regressed on a few projects.
I don’t have new-in-box network gear that was probably over $100,000 in value that’s been sitting in storage so long it’s out of warranty, possibly nearing End Of Life.
I’m pretty sure that’s happened in my office too.
I can’t come into work today. Rockstar requires that I offer my assistance as a consultant in reviewing their latest software for PC.

It’s really sad. Currently one item on my plate is swapping our a router that was End-Of-Support in 2008!
(Not just End of Life, as in they stop developing for it and selling them, but End of Support as in they wouldn’t patch a bug if pinging 13.13.13.13 actually opened a gateway to hell in the data center.)
(13.13.13.13 should only open a portal if you’ve entered from the configuration prompt “router ip summoning-circle RIP”, but only in the little-known IPv666.)

I’m posting that concept to a forum of writers. If done right, that would make for a hilarious story.
We just retired a SAN that had been in place for just shy of a decade.
It was retired now because multiple drives and a controller failed and we no longer trusted it. If not for these failures, the retirement project would have dragged on for another year or more.
Did it get a gold watch, or just a pension?

Why do you have voice mail if you’re not going to listen to it and just blindly call back to whoever calls you?
I’d rather not have voice mail. Want to leave me a message, send an email like you should have in the first place.
I’ve softened up on this position now that we can archive the voice mail in the client file, but too many people like to leave earth changing voice mails instead of documenting them via email.
“Why did you do this?”

“Did they ask for exactly this?”
“I think so, it was six months ago man.”

Funny how you make fun of the engineers for missing a prior email you sent to them when you do the same thing often with my emails. Give them a break, man.
Your software would be fantastic, if:
- it didn’t require me to do the same thing over and over to preserve what I did the first time.
- it could recognize its own file extensions.
- it didn’t insert a bunch of garbage data every time I try to use one particular tool.
- it ever let me finish a project without crashing completely.
The software in question is Sculptris, which I was very excited to find.

I kindly request that urgent attention be given to the single airconditioner unit in our current server room. Whenever the power fails, it trips its circuit breaker.
This is most problematic, especially should the power fail over weekends.
For some reason you cannot set the temperature lower than 22 degrees Celsius as it will cause the unit to ice up.
I nicely requested that we look at installing a new unit, as it will be more efficient than the older unit, and then you can have one of either as a backup in case one should fail.
But no, you decided that we will keep the unit as is, and get a temperature monitoring unit for the server room which can send out SMS’es should the temperature go up.
Penny wise, pound foolish springs to mind.
The interest I’m going to be paying myself on my 401k loan is not more than the 5 year return rate on my 401k, which is a full 14 points lower than what I’m getting on my IRA I manage myself. I’m also not paying some idiot 1% to only make me 1.5% in gains over the last three years. The fucking market is bubbling, and I’m 30+% in bonds… WTF?
