Ouch. How much longer are you in?
The real question: when do I find a civilian job and go back to āone weekend a monthā status? This silliness is all my full-time gig with the Guard; my weekend job is easy.
And most of the latest silliness is actually just Air Force; my involvement with that ends tomorrow afternoon.
OK, since youāve had upmteen years active duty guard, and a few reglur guard, how does the retirement picture work.
Mine was easy to figure out, yours sounds like youād need a slide rule.
The person who normally does this has the mentality of a Golden Retrieverā¦very ADD/ADHD and really has no clue what he does pisses people off even if we confront him about itā¦which I have.
Still, that doesnāt seem like a good excuse to steal equipment you need, thus greatly inconveniencing you.
Just a thought - maybe give him a real world exampleā¦ Tell him to get up. Take his chair without another word. Donāt bring it back. Take it to your office/desk, place it next to yours, and set your backpack on it (or a book or whatever). When he follows you and is like WTF?, explain that he just experienced what he did to you, more or less. You can be nice about explaining the life lesson, or not, depending on how well he learns.
Or, as a friend would sayā¦ just go kick him in the teeth and take your stuff back.
You, sir, are a consummate guru when it comes to misunderstandings. Nothing can get past you when it comes to misunderstanding something. Tickets? Yep, you misunderstand content in those. Emails? Same exact thing. Conversations? You betcha.
Yeah, retirement is a little complicated. Mine is relatively straightforward, actually, since almost all of my Guard time has been active duty; if I hang around on orders another 9 years or so, I can retire with 20 active (assuming such a thing still exists in 2024; it may not still be there in 2016).
Short of that, once I hit 20 total time in service (and decided to retire), my retirement would be pro-rated, so if I had 10 active years out of 20 years in service, Iād get half of the regular retirement (50% of base pay). But, of course, not until I turn 62; itās pro-rated, and itās delayed.
Base pay for an E7 with 20+ years time in service is $4415 per month. So if I dropped off active duty right now, just did my one weekend a month until I hit 20 years service, and did not get further promoted or pay increases (except for time in service pay bumps), at age 62 I would get $1214 per month.
Oh, and also the benefits of the wonderful VA medical system.
Itās best not to do the math on this. Only idiots do it for money.
If I stay active duty until I hit 20 years, the same scenario would net me $2208 per month at age 46. So I can get an extra $1000 per month much sooner if Iām willing to sit and do the same damned thing every day for the next 8 years with no real possibilities for progression or development short of another foreign invasion. And assuming that the program just doesnāt get cut out from under me, or another peace dividend doesnāt kick me out with nothing, or, or, or.
Every once in a while I play what if on that. Iād have been retired for 4 years now, assuming I lived. I was infantry, and I donāt doubt I would have stayed that way for at least another enlistment or two. I do know even without combat issues, Iād be a wreck. 40 year old infantrymen arenāt the same as 40 year old mechanics or something, especially since I was light infantry.
But, Iād likely be doing something with my hands for beer money and living off my retirement somewhere in the woods.Iād also have gotten out with a huge nest egg. Donāt know if I ever would have gotten married and had kids though.
Its sad whatās happened to the VA. They were shit in the 80ās, then the bonus structure was implemented and things got awesome for maybe 10 years in the 90ās and then it all went overboard again.
Yeah, Iāve entertained that thought a few times. I would have been āretiredā 11 years ago, with a skillset that would not have translated easily into civilian life. Iād like to think I would have taken advantage of the funds set aside for college, but probably not done as well or gone to the same schools I did. I also would likely have been miserable, in the closet for all of that time.
I try to limit the amount of āwhat would have beenā I do, although it is difficult at times.
Yeah, not much use for planning a small unit ambush with fall back points and negotiating 12 miles of swamp out there in the real world. You can parlay a lot of it into leadership skills, or possibly the police, but I know for damn sure after 20 years active duty college would not be on my short list. Maybe community college, or just some classes for fun, but not real college college.
Main thing the infantry taught me is that anything can be endured and/or used to your advantage. I wish that lesson stuck with me better lately.
Mine was supply, or āstorekeeperā. That and chipping paint off steel arenāt skillsets that would provide a decent wage, especially after 20 years of active duty.
Hey, are you still working out? Itās really paying off for you. Keep up the good work!
Iād be out of this office faster than you can say HR complaint. But there are two women here that are totally kicking their own asses into shape and I canāt compliment them at all without potentially losing my job.
Weird.
Thatās not poetic license, thatās poetic larceny.
Keep on mangling mythology like a wood-chipper on acid, and I will set you up on a blind date with the Furies.
I know youāre new, but when you have this issue, you need to create a ticket, not email desktop. We donāt handle that app anyway. Create a ticket and we will forward it to the proper group. Continue to do it this way and Iāll go tell your boss what a dumbass you are.
Youāre the supervisor with many more years of experience in the field than me. Why in the world do I have to come up with ideas to save your ass when youāre handling a difficult problem? Figure it out yourself, for once.
The sequel to the Dad Conspiracy is ready for release on Amazon next month.
It is often said that the internet routes to avoid damage. The networking professionals that are all leaving in droves have attempted to do the same to additional layers of bureaucracy.
Management, are you learning from this?
Restart =/= shut down. Thanks for fucking up the updates.
Man, itās good to not have you bugging me today. Iām actually getting some work done without any negativity.
You know, we used to be able to make things work better around here. Iām sure the end users love that weāre not even aware of what weāre responsible for from day to day.
