Unless he’s like me and gets car sick if he tries to read on a moving vehicle…
I would not have made it through childhood like that. We drove everywhere, and I read as long as there was light. I remember reading in other car’s headlights on the highway.
I’ve thought it would be nice to have mass transit just so I could read on the way back and forth… what do you do instead?
Wow, that’s awful. How far do you have to go? Around here, hour+ commutes are pretty common, but Houston is so spread out that someone might work 60 miles from home.
EDIT - removed the rogue “not”… 1 - 1.5 hour commutes are not uncommon / are pretty common… I was distracted when I was posting
I watch scenery and traffic. It’s one reason I would much rather drive than be a passenger.
Edit: Oh, and music. I listen to music.
No, I get a lot of reading done on the trains… Which reminds me, the iPad needs refilling.
By road, it’s about 45km (say 27 miles) in pretty much a straight line, and the train mirrors the road pretty closely.
The public transport here hasn’t received much in the way of investment in at least 30 years. I can’t speak for the busses or trams (yes, we have trams here). So on our train lines we have ancient signalling equipment that fails on a regular basis, and not enough trains with too few carriages (but we can’t add more carriages because all the stations are too small, and we can’t run more trains because the signalling is too old).
There was a report last year which said trains on the line I use were overloaded by as much as 50% on a regular basis.
Yet our government can whip up billions of dollars for more roads.
Went this morning to the fruit and veg market, spent about R1700 on fruit and veggies. We asked people before the time if they want to order something, purchase what they wanted, then sell it to them. Our prices are cheaper than the shops plus we make a bit of a profit too. Lots of people struggling financially welcomes this as it enables them to get fresh food and produce for less than in the shops. And the shops’ produce is not always fresh.
Wife made a couple of deliveries. We got R1700 back AND fresh fruit and veg for a week or two. Seems business is starting to pick up at last.
Previously we did not get all our money back, and it was a rocky start.
That’s awesome.
I’d likely get arrested if I did that on a regular basis without a license.
Most of our chickens are almost at the stage where they can start producing butt nuggets (eggs) - which can be an additional source of income for us. Free range chickens ftw (but not if you step barefoot into a wet puddle of chicken dropping grrr)
What? You need a license to trade in foodstuffs your side of the world?
The ultimate aim is to have other income/revenue that I can resign from IT and start working for myself. Still a long way to go…
for almost everything above a certain level of activity. and even then if it disturbs the neighbors they can still get you.
Little girls get arrested for selling lemonade in their yards.
Yeah, nanny state.
Government-types always have an excuse - they want to tax you, and for food, I can imagine health concerns, too (was food stored/handled properly, etc.)
But don’t let that diminish your happiness! Enjoy your success!
@sig sighting!
I have not lost my touch. It’s been years since I put together a puzzle, but I put together a thousand piece puzzle today.
If I tried to do that large a puzzle in one sitting, my back would be useless for at least a week.
I got up and went for walks!
Everyone knows that Rush is my favorite band. So when I saw this picture on nfl.com earlier it gave me a chuckle.
My 7th-grade daughter and I will be attending the FIRST Tech 2017 State Championship this afternoon and tomorrow with her FTC team. I’m also a safety mentor on my 10-grade son’s FRC Robotics team and they are busy in the middle of a 6-week build season.
Here’s a video she whipped together last night on her iPhone:
Here’s a match from the qualifier tournament last month that they ended up losing, but it shows the lift mechanism in action very well at the end of the match:
Went for an interview at my previous company, and got the job.
Still waiting for my formal notice of employment before resigning.
