I went to work today (not the new teaching job, but a two day gig), sat around for an hour, made a couple of phone calls to my recruiter, sat around for another hour, made a couple more phone calls to the recruiter and project manager, sat around for another hour, then was told to go on home and get paid for a full 8 hours.
I went to my Dadâs for Christmas on Saturday. Itâs the first time Iâve been in that house since 2008 or so, maybe earlier.
I could see the floor, though it was covered with weird stains and gunk and stuff, and the oven was new so I wasnât too worried about the food, though the counter was still covered with some sort of film. I didnât go into the bathroom, though my wife and daughter both did and apparently there was some sort of animal poop on the floor in there still (his last pet died at least a year ago). The smell went away after a half hour or so, except occasionally it came back.
I feel bad, because itâs obvious he did so much work to get it to that point. He was so proud. But it was my step mother saying they were like three quarters done that floored me. There are stains on the walls, lord knows what from, like at the six foot level, the floor is kind of mushy, the carpet is a total loss, and the smell is overpowering. There are broken things just here and there.
That being said. He is making progress, the place is looking better, my cousin is living there and helping out, and my step mother is getting a inheritance they are putting towards rebuilding some rotted out things. So this actually does make me happy, but then the fact that this makes me happy makes me kind of sad. And my youngest didnât complain or say anything eight-year oldish about the ick.
@Woodman if you donât mind me asking, how did your dadâs house get so jacked up?
iâm not totally sure. My step mother has multiple medical issues, and my Dad has knee issues and some other issues himself, and is clinically depressed but is managing it with meds. Itâs not exactly hoarding, since most of it is just trash and garbage, he hangs on to just enough stuff to clutter that up.
I am thinking that one of the times he was down after a knee replacement that the house got away from him and he put blinders on and just never got it back into shape. My step mother has a brain a bit better than mush MS has really done a number on her critical thinking.
Daffodil not only has a new set of wheels, she has a new home.
I bought the first parts of our new computer today. Shiny case and power supply. Next paycheque heralds the arrival of the motherboard, processor and RAM.
Digging into the back of my liquor cabinet and finding the last bottle of mead from a case I bought 25 years ago. I think Iâll open it for my 50th birthday next month.
Roommate and I took the new kitties to the vet for a general checkup today. Not only are both in good health, but weâre getting prepared to settle the bill when the vet says, âThereâs no charge. We donât charge for a first general check on kitties adopted from the shelter.â
That was really nice. Iâm glad I have a good relationship with my vet.
Thatâs a lot better than San Francisco. You have to call and get an appointment, and the appointment has to be within five days in order to be free.
It probably helps that Iâve been going to this cat hospital for the last ten years or so. She was the one who administered Pestoâs last shot last month, too. The shelter gave us a list of vets who would give a free exam, but we chose to ignore that list and go to our regular vet.
No free checkups for me. On the other hand, one of things my vet does very nicely is when it comes time to euthanize. They have a separate room for the procedure with a private exit and theyâve always told me not to worry about the bill until some time has passed. I had a friend who just had to put their dog down and one of the things that bothered him was the insistence that they pay up at the end of the procedure.
My vet doesnât have a separate exit, but they have never asked for payment at the time of euthanasia. Theyâve always sent me a card afterwards, then the bill a day or two later.
This is recent for me, too, since both of my boys passed over the summer.
The first was just in an exam room and I went through the regular exit and paid on the way out.
The second was at an after hours emergency vet. Once the decision had been made, I paid while they prepped Norman. They had a nice private room with more comfortable seating. I think it had a private door to the outside, along with ones to the lobby/waiting room and vetâs back room area; I just went out through the lobby.
And now weâve hijacked the happy thread.
So, on a happier note, I get to see my new doggie when I get home from work, and heâll be jumping with excitement!
The RAM upgrade for my MacBook Pro arrived today. So now itâs running on 16GB of 1600MHz RAM⌠the idea being that since it only runs it at 130[something]MHz itâll be cooler running and Iâll stop slowly roasting my knees
Yeah, thatâs what $Wifeâs place does. She doesnât enjoy writing the cards. I think she hand-writes each one, actually.
They also have stuff set up the various services to handle the remains, so you can do whatever youâre comfortable with.
(Although, we have a couple boxes of ashes from $Wifeâs parents dogs, as theyâre not ready for them a couple years laterâŚ)
I think every vet Iâve ever taken a pet to for their last visit has offered various options.
Back to happy stuff! Pretty soon Iâm going to post a collage of my functioning cat trap. So far I have pictures of four successful captures. ![]()
âIt really whips the llamaâs assâ
Just installed Winamp at work.
âBAAAAAAAAAâ
God, how long has it been since I heard that?
Did they finally update it?
Nope, still the 2013 version, though apparently they are going to do a minor update this year and maybe a major update in the next year or two.
