Got a second bike ride in this weekend and returned a total of five shopping carts to the respective groceries stores. Combines being a good Samaritan with changing up the routine.
Made me appreciate again that buying the bicycle was a good choice earlier this year. A 24-speed drive means I can easily switch up or down as needed and keep the same amount of effort while I pedal. Not doing so well going up hills, yet, but I’ll get there.
Yesterday, finally talking to Howard Taylor, while my daughter chatted him up for ten minutes or so. I’ve now seen the comic for August 26th being inked.
Today, I’m done with GenCon.

Two nights of Witch Hunter (My daughter apparently made one of the best plays of the Con in this game, I was congratulated a couple times the next night for her play, something about accusing and lynching another witch and then killing the last villagers the next night.
Two mornings of Pathfinder.
Decided Malifaux is the tabletop game of choice. Also decided not to buy at the Con, Amazon has last season’s stuff for like 20% off.
Wandered around the place and bought lots of cools stuff. I get to go to work tomorrow and relax.
My daughter got life advice from Howard and Lars, the artist for Looking for Group. So that was awesome

You could go back and watch all the episodes of Doctor Who in order… it started in 1963, so that would keep you occupied for a while.

Everyone has more and less favorite Doctors. For the most part, the resurrected series is well done.
As a fan of science fiction and fantasy (not so much high fantasty though) and also a fan of continuity in an established universe… The New Who does indeed have it’s good episodes, it’s good stories and characters and well thought out plots just like Old Who. New Who however doesn’t get continuity. They’ve even changed Time Lord from being a title to being a race, because keeping the Doctor as an aristocrat within a species of near-humans when performing for an audience of mainly working- and middle-class viewers who don’t take kindly to the aristocracy would have been 1) unwatchable and 2) continuity.
Also, they totally messed up his age to the point that the Doctor got younger for a while. And they evolved some species beyond the possibility of regular timeflows and didn’t mention it, meanwhile they made a whole story-arc involving the Ood evolving slightly different social structures over the course of several millennia.
And my current New Who favourite Doctor is Smith because even though Moffat wrote three seasons of absolute garbage for him, he was still quirky and interesting, which was so welcome after the hyper-emo that was Tennant and the Six Episode Parade Of Death. I genuinely mean it when I say I like Doctor Who, but the writers of the post-2005 Revival have done nothing towards research beyond a cursory Google search for names to bring back from the 60s and 70s.
I don’t poo-poo it. I want it to be better. I want the writers to care. I want the writers to care as much as Peter Capaldi cares – he wants to be a great doctor, and half of his initial season is borderline unwatchable because of budget cuts and truly abysmal writing. Ashildr is a great character. That damn sidekick though… I am so glad she’s been killed off. I mean seriously, for a writer as established and esteemed as Moffat, he really, really can’t write female characters for the Doctor Who universe.
All the key parts for my home server/NAS build have (finally) arrived. Now I can start planning the build - right as soon as I have some spare time…

I got sidetracked a few years ago and missed from about halfway through Smith’s run. I’ve been catching up for the past few weeks. Series 8 & 9 are on Amazon Prime now! Anyway, I’m finally up to Capaldi.
As a bonus, in the one last night (Listen?) when Clara is hiding under the Doctor’s childhood bed in the barn, the parents’ dialogue mentions his options for the future - something along the lines of either military training or going to Time Lord school. I agree that they have issues, but it does seem that they make at least a token effort at getting continuity right. I try not to get too worked up over it, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I know what you mean, and there is effort there. But they still actually got that wrong too… it wasn’t a school, the military was only an option after training, and children didn’t exactly have parents, they were woven on Looms:
…and really, I’m sorry about the Clara spoiler… but at the same time she totally deserves everything she gets heh heh.
All the companions have their annoying moments or traits. I’m still amused by her obsession with soufflés. It doesn’t hurt that she’s cute as a button.
I respect the old series, but to be honest have no desire to watch it. It’s like watching a particularly dull old movie to me. Pacing seems off, language odd. I’d rather watch old Commander Cody serials, especially if they’re the ones on some of the classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes I’ve been watching.
New one has some duds, but overall is a bit more interesting. I think going to a format where multi-episode arcs are restricted may be for the best. The new series has a major problem, to me, in that when it does have a great idea it runs it into the ground.
The first New Dalek appearance was awesome: A single Dalek is a lethal threat to modern private-security types, but that’s secondary. The big issue is that the Doctor has to confront if his murder-death-kill attitude to the Daleks is looking into the abyss and becoming the monster. It’s a surprisingly emotional episode, especially with the wacky shenanigans of the couple-episode hacker-teen.
But then Daleks became a sort of Annual thing. As did other favorite threats. I feel like it’s just standard that every season will have a Dalek episode, a Cyberman episode, and a Weeping Angel episode. Sometimes they’ll team up, but that’s usually a multi-parter.
Still good episodes, just elements I get burned out on very quickly. River Song’s on that list for me, too.
I just had my first annual review with this new boss, and I’m awesome.
Biggest criticism is that I don’t delegate well, and while I’m more than willing to help others I don’t accept help gracefully.
I’m getting the max, but she doesn’t know what that is yet. Likely low single digits.
